Bluetooth Modules Small Enough To Embed In Zaurus?
« on: June 14, 2005, 08:53:13 am »
I'm still interested in fitting a bluetooth adaptor inside a Zaurus. I know I could (I guess) get a 3100, and replace the internal microdrive with a bluetooth CF adaptor and use a ROM image from a C1000.

I would steal the serial lines from the IRDA adaptor. Although someone did say that the 860's processor has a second serial port, it's not clear whether that's easily accessible without soldering onto the CPU!

I've not taken my 860 apart (yet!), but I have looked carefully at lots of photos, and I can't tell just how much room there is, but I am guessing it isn't going to be much. Can anyone give me a better idea?

Meanwhile, I found a few places with embedded bluetooth modules:
http://www.blueradios.com/hardware.htm
http://www.national.com/appinfo/wireless/simply_blue.html

I have a contact at cambridge silicon radios I might ask too.

I have some pics of CSR BC02-ext here:

It's sorta old (spring 2004), but pics still apply.

I'd be happy with a WiFi/BT CF card.  I have found a WiFi/BT USB key, but no CF.  Swapping from WiFi to BT is lame.

you miss the point. the whole idea is to NOT use up the SD or CF slot on an 860 (or the internal slot on a 3100)! Anyway, you *can* buy a compact flash bluetooth adaptor, the socket/symbol one is same size as a flash memory card and doesn't stick out at all so is nice and neat; the Ambicom ones aren't too bad either.

My point is:
Probably one in ten threads on this forum either mourn the premature death of the 6000L (and even question why the 6000W was stillborn), and moan the lack of a clamshell with any kind of wireless (except IR which just doesn't count).

I am trying to establish whether there is a real chance of it being possible at all, given the space constraints. I am even wondering whether it'd be possible to build an IRDA-to-Bluetooth adaptor which could somehow clip on the side of the Zaurus.

I'd love a combo BT+WiFi CF card.  Since the 3x00 models already have a large internal store, I wouldn't mourn the loss of the CF slot so much.  Why won't any manufacturers produce one?

The SunWiFly card could be an alternative, if there were driver support.  It's thin enough to embed into a case so it might be possible to make a reasonably elegent solution.

Back to the original question, guylhelm had a specific recommendation for a module to solder into the 6000L.  I suppose it could work in the C models too.  See:

Having googled for "embedded bluetooth module", I've found that there's quite a bit of choice. The hard part is finding one which has the right kind of serial interface. I found one here that could also be hooked up to the audio port:
[a href=\"http://www.free2move.se/prod_mod_AC2.htm]http://www.free2move.se/prod_mod_AC2.htm[/url]

I think I'm going to have to open up my Z and try and determine if there's space...

A litle bit off topic, but have you seen this mini-SD WiFi card?

http://www.spectec.com.tw/en/sdw-820.htm

I wonder if there are any miniSD-to-CF adapters out there in which the miniSD would entirely fit in the CF adapter. I've seen SD-toCF adapters like that before, but not yet any miniSD one.

In this case, we'd have a CF-form factor WiFi hardware solution, and probably in the near future the same could be true for BT miniSD cards...

Of course, this doesn't solve the problem of getting drivers for this stuff.

Hmmm, I see what you're getting at - a CF card without the sticky-outy bit!

The only people who've done SD wifi so far have been C-Guys, and even then I think their drivers are very very specific to Sharp ROMS.
