Cacko 1.23 Questions...
« on: November 17, 2005, 12:31:41 pm »
Hello,

I'd like to know:
1.) is it possible to 'clear' the desktop, I don't want to see the PIM / Appl/...menu at the upper screen. Just the button on the left side or maybe some Icons I move to the desktop...
2.) where are files when I install and they are not in any menu ie. clitconverter
3.) when I downclock the proz. do I have to do anything else (volt an the PX270) or is it  all done by cako? I think 208Mhz is enough for mp3's or ebooks, with kino I use 520Mhz cause it's a bit better. I don't have to worry about overclocking, do I ?
4.) what abour the swapfile - Ok I read here just use it for BIG appl. or compiling, true?
5.) sometimes a prog. hangs, is there a software reset ? Or do I have to use the button inside the battery ?
6.) you can change the keyboard for other languages BUT is it possible to write foreign GERMAN like ß, Ö, Ü, Ä ?
7.) WMV files movies with 320x180 or 320x240 start, then after 1sec. Kino brings back it's homescreen, proble with WMV or just not working here (I used those file from PPC to Palm i.e. Ice Age) ?
8.) I've read somwhere here what to type into the console when I don't know which
libs a package needs to run proper, can someone help? I can't find it anymore.
9.) is qpdf the BEST on Zaurus or is there something else? I think it's slow...
10.) antaliasing or ClearType - how to do?

Hope to get some answers, sorry if over the past year(s) those questions have allready been asked...

Cacko 1.23 Questions...

- Hurm.  I'm sure a little looking around here at OESF will answer nearly every single one of these questions.  Not all, I'm sure, but I would think all but two.  I know searching OESF isn't just the most attractive thing to do, but I'm under the impression you haven't even looked.  That's never a good impression to have.

- None-the-less, here's a seat-of-the-pants answer.

1] Never heard of doing this, but the icons are simply .desktop files.  You can remove them and they won't show up.  BUT I think the same .desktop files are used to generate the "Qt Menu", so removing them will have limited utility.

2] I'd guess they're either command-line items that can't be launched from an icon easily, or the .ipk didn't include a .desktop file in the correct place.  If the former, a menu selection may not help you.  If the latter, look at the existing .desktop files and it's pretty easy to figure out how to make your own.  Then launch Tab Manager, move any icon, then move it back, and exit Tab Manager.  Your new .deskop icons will appear on the desktop and in the menu.

3] I use 104Mhz for MP3 without any problems, and an entire album doesn't even move off 100% charge.  (grin)  I've never had trouble overclocking, but do it sparingly, because I'm of the opinion that it stresses the system in ways it wasn't strictly designed to handle.  Just because it works doesn't mean it's not doing harm.  Others may have different opinoins.  Just use the applet ... nothing else is needed and the speed change takes effect immediately.

4] It's a pretty popular opinion that swap isn't good unless one has a hard drive.  It works in flash, but it's A) not too very fast and B) stands a good chance of producing bad blocks in the flash.  If it's removable that's not a big deal ... flash is cheap.  My personal view is to not use a swap file because I don't have a hard drive, and compile on a Linux box.  X is just slow for me.  (shrug)

5] Open a command line and kill it, or use the System Info application to do the same thing.  If the entire unit is hung, telnet or ssh is the only way to fix it.  Since the Z has no telnet running by default, and ssh requires some setup to work, if you don't have things in place you're just sunk.  Hiro very, very, very rarely gets to this point ... a command line and kill is nearly always all that's needed.

6) I can't address this, being an English-only kinda guy.  I do know Cacko has numerous keymaps available.  Try it.

7] I can't address this, having never played a WMA on the Z.  I'd do an MPEG, MP4, or some other non-proprietary format before I'd do anything associated with Winbloze.  I do know there's a lot of info on movies and Z here somewhere.  How to generate them, apps to use, best formats, best frame rates, everything.  There's also a lot on Kino, but since I have very little problem with it, I haven't spent time reading about it.

8) It's called "Konsole".  I don't recall where it was because I've moved my icons all over the place, but it may have been under "Applications".  There aren't that many tabs to start with ... just look for it?

9] QPDF is slow, bit I've not personally encountered anything that works better.

10] Search the forum ... I read something recently about fonts on Qtopia, and there was a link to instructions, even on how to make your own fonts.  In fact, it's the thread just before this one, called "Fonts for Qtopia".

Items with a square bracket] should be answerable by searching the forum.

Now I'm REALLY feeling like someone didn't even bother to pay the slightest attention to the wealth of information here at OESF.  Heinous, dude...

Well I use this Forum and another one in German(y) often. This means I read and try to understand BUT as I'm not the Linux Guy I don't understand all.

I did, and got the fonts that's what made me think about antialiasing (like on PPC or even Windows)

@ Ragnorok: thanks for the faq.

I over read the insulting stuff :-)

- I understand.  My "not good feeling" is based upon the fact that your list of questions all have readily available answers that, imho, don't require a Linux Guru to understand.  Does that keep me from answering?  (grin)
- Then again, I could be simply not understanding the level of Linux knowledge needed to understand things here.

- Oh.  This wasn't obvious, and you did seem to be a newbie, so I typed a newbie answer.  Apologies!
- If you look in the .desktop file for the application you want to run, there is a line called "Exec=".  Type in the part after that, on the command line, for whatever you'd like to run that way.  It'll launch in GUI just like always, but you'll be able to tap the command line icon on the "Qt Bar" and see what it's dumping there, which is normally  invisible.  When you exit it'll go back to the command line and you should be able to scroll back and see what it printed.

- Cool.  I must admit after performing a search myself the available info is significantly less than expected, based on how much I merely stumbled across relating to fonts.  D'oh!

1) you can use the tab settings applet to make a blank palmtop with no icons in it.

8) ldd will list library dependancies

9) There is qpdf2, but I'm unsure how different it may be.

2) some of those may be commandline tools or the install didn't creat .desktop properly.  Tab settings may be able to help sometimes.

5) most of the time it is the hardware reset.  Sometimes if you're on the network, you may be able to ssh in and restart qt.  Very rare though.
