Uninstall Opera & Netfront?
« on: January 22, 2006, 04:30:32 pm »
I just found "firefox_0.9-3_arm.ipk" here:
http://greenant.net/portal/greenant/wiki/Zaurus3100

I would like to install it because I've been using firefox on my PC for 3 years now and am very familiar with it. I don't connect to the internet with my C3100. I use a browser for offline reading.
I would like to uninstall Opera and Netfront to free up some memory. The Firefox IPK is 7.1MB and it insists on being installed to "Program area" in Cacko 1.23. It won't install to an SD card.
Can Opera and Netfront be uninstalled?
I would rather use Picsel Browser for Zaurus, but they seem to be out of stock until late February.

Thank you for reading this,
Jon

xamindar,
I didn't install it yet, because it wouldn't let me install it to my SD card. I cancelled it
I figured it would work because the site I got it from is SL-C3100 specific. I'll go back and look if he/she is using pdaXrom or Cacko.

Jon

EDIT: I just looked and only cacko and OpenZaurus is shown on the page. Below is a paste from the page.
------------------------------------
HOWTOs?
Zaurus Networking
    Bluetooth Adapters
    GPRS internet over Bluetooth
    PAN network over Bluetooth
    USB TCP/IP on Mac
    [Macintosh Synchronisation]?
    WiFi
    Zaurus VoIP

ROMs
    [OpenZaurus]?
    Cacko
------------------------------------
2nd EDIT: I got the above Firefox IPK from this feed:
------------------------------------
Zaurus Software
    Greenant.net 3100 feed - apps tested for Cacko 1.23
------------------------------------

I'm installing it now,
Jon

Uninstall Opera & Netfront?

It doesn't work. It won't launch. It gets the white splash over the icon, and the hourglass is on the taskbar, (bottom bar), then the hourglass goes off after about 15 seconds. The icon stays white. I have to restart Qtopia to get the icon to it's pre-launch state.
Time to uninstall this....

At the minimum you would need X/Qt.  pdaXrom or Debian pocketworkstation would be better.

Firefox works fine, but it is much slower than other browsers.

To remove built-in apps you would need to modify your root partition.  You could make your Z unbootable if you don't know what you are doing.  This is even trickier on Cacko, where you need to rebuild the squashfs blob mounted on /usr

Thank you DrWowe
As a linux newbie, I Won't Be Doing That!!
I'll leave them where they are..

BTW, I just uninstalled Firefox and it left a blank icon in the group that I moved it to.
When I first installed it, it placed it's icon under "Applications", so I moved it to "Network" Now there is a blank Firefox icon in "Network". Was the uninstallation incomplete? or should I just delete the icon in the "Tabs" settings?
Jon

EDIT: If using Netfront 3.1 in Cacko, (I don't know about other ROMs), DO NOT Disable the "Main Menu" under the "View > Toolbar" settings!
I did this to get more screen space. My menu and toolbar were both disabled, and it took me over an hour to find out how to get them back. I tried every FN key combination, then found a "hidden" feature. This "hidden" feature is accessed by tapping in the browser page area and holding. A menu will pop up, but it didn't have the option to re-enable the toolbar/menu. I finally browsed for Netfront in Tree!Explorer, and found a "prefrences" file. I opened this up in ZEditor and found the setting for the disabled menu, and changed it from FALSE to TRUE. This prefrences file has an introduction at the top which says: "DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE"
Anyway, this got my menu/toolbar back....
BTW, Both Tree!Explorer & ZEditor are set as root

You can get back the Main Menu bar by just pressing the "Menu" button on the keyboard (assuming it's not been remapped).

Thank you rokugo,
I should slap myself for overlooking such an obvious function!
I forgot that the menu button on the keyboard acts just like the menu silkscreen icon on my Palm..

Meanie, thank you for the links and all your useful information. I think a lot of Zaurus newbies, like me, would be Lost without all the information and help you provide.
I may look into that later, since I really need to learn more about this amazing machine.
