On The Next 3.5.4.1 A/b Release
« on: March 27, 2006, 04:18:41 am »
I brought up a number of issues with the current alpha release of OZ for the C3000 in its own thread but a number of my questions have remained unanswered so I'm hoping that by breaking off into a new thread I've got a better chance of getting an answer

1. Will there be an easy way to turn off an inserted wifi card without using the command line in the next release? Maybe there already is a way that I don't know about? If so it isn't very obvious and should be moved to being under the wifi icon. I suppose I'll have to add this, as well as a search option in the package manager, to the GPE wishlist and wait for the next GPE release will I, or is that wifi tool not actually part of GPE (matchbox?)?

2. I didn't get to check for it myself whilst I was testing butI think it is Da_Blitz who has been protesting about lack of an overclocking tool. Will this be in the next alpha/beta?

3. Will the pxa video acceleration routines make it in time for 3.5.4.1 final or will we have to wait longer for that?

4. The install guide recommends standard partitioning, but can we already use a custom partition map? Are there certain rules I must abide by for it to work? If we can do this then I'd like to see the install instructions updated because when I next install OZ I will want a bigger root partition.

5. The openembedded bug tracker still doesn't have an option for reporting bugs against 3.5.4.1. Have any of the packaging bugs I mentioned been fixed then? Specifically-

GPE-filemanger dependency probs (won't install)
beep-media-player doesn't work
Greyed-out spell-check option in Abiword even though aspell was installed

I'm presuming that all these three are bugs to be tracked against openembedded?

6. I started a separate thread in the OZ/GPE forum asking if it was possible to import data from the cacko calendar into the GPE calendar but no-one replied. It would be a shame if this remained a problem for people migrating to GPE. I'm presuming this isn't possible yet.

7. Where possible gpe-filemanager should be included as standard in OZ/GPE- will it be included in the next OZ/GPE release for the C3000?

Again, Big Thanks to the OZ devs! If i wasn't absolutely stone cold broke (I have £10 to my name now, I'm unemployed and can't claim any benefits) I would buy my own Z and make a good donation to this project as it think its one of the most exciting software projects around.

streamtuner

I've tried this one on  zaurus, but the parsing of the urls  each time you click on a tab is so slow that it's barely usable (IMHO of course)

What do you mean by you've tried streamtuner on Zaurus? Have you tried it under OZ w/ a 2.6 kernel? Abiword was almost unusable on pdaxrom as it took so long to load and was pretty sluggish but under OZ/2.6 it runs like a dream. I'm only interested in how things perform on a cxx00 running a 2.6.x kernel

Thanks for the link coredump- it seems all the packages I mentioned aren't in OE yet so how do I get them included?

Someone needs to write a matchbox plugin to control the CF/SD card. Something like the Opie card plugin would be cool.

This is presumably dependant on the kernel (and whether it has the correct /sysfs entries to allow it under 2.6). Do you know anything about how it should be implemented? You might try asking RP on irc (#openzaurus or #oe).

3. Will the pxa video acceleration routines make it in time for 3.5.4.1 final or will we have to wait longer for that?

Again, talk to RP as he's our 2.6.x guru.

Afaik, this just needs someone to look at what the pdaXrom people have been doing and implement that in our updater.sh.

What is the Cacko calendar? What format does it use to store its data? If it's the dtm stuff from Sharp then there were some tools to extract the data iirc. You can also sync with Outlook (for example) then change intellisync version and sync with OZ.

7. Where possible gpe-filemanager should be included as standard in OZ/GPE- will it be included in the next OZ/GPE release for the C3000?

It's rather large (due to its deps). It used to be in gpe-image for the c7x0 so it may be included in that for the cx000. Submit it as a bug (as an enhancement).

Yeah, it is the dtm calendar. Does anyone know the name of these tools? Can they convert into a format that the GPE calendar can import?

Ah, sorry, GPE calendar I'm not sure about, however as it's an open format it should be possible to modify the existing xml converter.

GPE PIM can sync to stuff using opensync, so it's just a matter of syncing the dtm stuff to something opensync can understand (KDE, evolution or plain vcards) and sync it back to gpe.

OK, so you're saying that with the current version of dtm2xml I should be able to convert my dtm files into xml, open the xml file in evolution or kontact then.. I saw an 'import' option in the GPE calendar- does that not handle xml?

only vcards with one 'entry' per vcard. There was some work a while ago to support the 'all contacts in one big vcard' and iCal files, don't know if that has been finished yet

...SNIP...

It seems it has already been done. All that is missing is proper packaging (and improvements of the applet)
