First Impression Of Umpcs And Oragmi

it looks like it will be *at least* another year before they threaten our pdas.  It's bigger (not pocketable), heavier (2lb), longer to turn on and 2 hour run time.  If I'm going to napsack it, I'm going to bring an ultra portable notebook that has more resolution, more process speed and longer battery life instead of the UMPC.
I'm now an iphone user and use my zaurii as serial terminals, perl and shell scripting and when I need 640x480 screens

I think the nokia 770 is the zaurus successor, as soon as they release a keyboard-attached version.

The unveiled UMPC don't offer nothing new to the already existing oqo, sony, motion ls800, and fujitsu 1510, which I think are even superior and already in stores.

Uhm... another dissapointement after the 3200 ....

It is a little on the large size for my taste as well and the battery life is disappointing.  If they reach their target of a pocket-sized device running XP at a $500-$700 price point, they will have a run-a-way winner.

If there is a decent demand for the first devices, I think you will see many more models hit the market which will drive down the price and will likely produce some very innovative devices.

Thanks.  It would have happened alot sooned except I didn't really join this forum (was a guest most of the time) until the official sharp forum died.  I can't wait to see nokia's followup.

I used to carry a Newton around, they are mostly the same size.  It's not really that bad.  It will fit in my inside jacket pocket.  All my pants have cargo pockets as well, so it would fit there too.  Think I'd wait for the second gen ones though, let them work the biggest bugs out.  It's windows, so they will never work out all the bugs....

Yet another UMPC entry, but this one is a bit smaller and has a display that slides up to reveal a keyboard.  Kind of an oversized Sidekick hiptop device.

Promising!

And a faster processor, and maybe use a less obscure flashcard format..

- It runs winbloze ... it can't be made attractive unless:

A) It's significantly more hardware than a Zaurus
B) It runs at least as long as a Zaurus
C) It has a keyboard and expansion like a Zaurus
D) That piss-ant "operating system" can be replaced with Linux, so it's like a Zaurus

- In short, this "UMPC" will never threaten a Zaurus.  Lord Gates doesn't know how to do that, and I pray to <idnoc> that it never will.
- Nokia, on the other hand, is certainly on the right track!  (cheshire grin)

the umpc *is* more hardware (the q1 has 40GB hard drive, faster proc, BT, wifi and ether built in, bigger screen and so on...).  It is also bigger than a zaurus.  The main things they have to address are battery life. price and an external keyboard.  It is running x86 cpus so linux porting should be relatively trivial.  I saw a post where a manufacturer waiting for the MS oragami OS, decided to put a version of linux on it while prototyping.
