Newbie Questions - Which Rom?
« on: May 30, 2006, 12:09:20 pm »
I am completely new here, my Zaurus C1000 should be here in two days.  Which ROM should I go with?

I use linux on my pc, so I'm familiar with the very basic stuff,  but I'm more comfortable with the GUI setting.

I want to be able to synchronize by Contacts, Calendar, and To-do list from my old Pocket PC (will need help with that, suggestions are greatly appreciated).  I also want a semi-stable system because I will be using the Z to type notes in class, and I don't want to lose them.  I have purchased a Fellowes USB keyboard as well, so if any of the ROMs aren't compatible, I would need to know that.  I'm leaning toward Cacko because of needing to get it up and running quickly, but if something else has more compatibility with USB drives, mice, etc. I might sacrifice some simplicity for more compatibility.

Also, I know this is the Cacko-type forum, so should I post it in the other ROM forums, or is double-posting not aloud?

Thanks!

Oh, almost forgot, I also would like to play ogg and mp3 and watch videos, possibly with mplayer?

To begin with, you might want to stick with the Sharp ROM (or Cacko). If you feel there is something you must have that these don't provide or you feel like experimenting, try one of the other ROMs.

I think most ROMs at this stage are fairly stable, but stability is not as much of an issue when typing notes on a Zaurus, unlike a Pocket PC. If you save your work regurlary, it is saved in flash, so it will still be there in case of a crash, unlike the Pocket PC which keeps everything in RAM.

Music and video work fine in any ROM and there are several options. Check out KIno2 which is a GUI frontend for mplayer.

Thanks for the reply.  I didn't have the issue of losing data because of it being stored in ram, because it had Window Mobile 5.0.  My problem came when Word Mobile would crash, because the only way to "hit save" in Word Mobile is to hit "ok", and then it would take 30 seconds to save, and then I would have to reopen it (wait for another 30 seconds).  I gave up and am converting to linux.

I'll probably start with Cacko, does it sync the same as the Sharp ROM?  (for getting the info off of my pocket pc which synced with Outlook)

what version of outlook are we talking about?  I don't think 2003 works, but some older versions do.  This is using any sharp roms.

I have not come accross the problem of saving a document on the Z that you had with the pocket pc.  The only time it would be a problem is if the permissions didn't allow a save.
I'm now an iphone user and use my zaurii as serial terminals, perl and shell scripting and when I need 640x480 screens

I've got Outlook 2002, so I hope it works.  Yeah, Mobile Word has a pretty dumb layout.

I've seen some posts here that would indicate outlook 2002 works fine.

This thread describes syncing to 2002
