Anyone got Exult working on the 5600?
« on: May 03, 2004, 10:36:46 am »
I installed it on mine (Rom1.32), and Exult started OK but gave an error saying it could not find the data files. Fair enough, so I went through the instructions on the exult documentation page for use on the 5600. I had to change the chown commands to

chown zaurus homeetc etc

instead of

chown zaurus:zaurus homeetc etc

But the \"sed\" command could not find the exult.cfg file (I can\'t find it anywhere on the zaurus).

Now Exult won\'t start from the icon, the hourglass just disappears. If I try running exult from the terminal I get something like

exult:configuration.cc:130: bool Configuration ::read:read_config_string(const string &): Assertation \'s[nn]==\'<\'\' failed

If I try as root I get

Qt/Embedded data directory is not owned by user 0
Aborted

Now even if I uninstall and reinstall exult I get the same thing (it never starts and gives me the \"cannot find data files error\", which at least showed Exult was running!

I\'m muddling my way through as a linux newbie as best I can, but I\'m a  bit stumped!

Is there any way of resetting a Zaurus right back to \"as it came from the factory\" defaults, software and everything?

If anyone\'s interested, I got it working. Did a format to get back to factory config, installed Exult, LibSDL etc, this time I found the .exult.cfg (finally remembering that the leading \".\" means \"hidden\" DOH!), gritted my teeth, ran vi (experiencing the vague state of panic that usually ensues when using vi) and simply replaced all instances of \"homeroot\" with \"homezaurus\" and she now runs like a beaut.

May I just say how awesome it is to have Ultima on a Zaurus. I was a great fan of Ultima Underworld 1 and 2 on the PC (2 is, in my opinion, one of the most immersive and epic games of all time), always wanted to play the top-down adventures but never managed it since running games in DOS had become difficult by that time. Now I finally get to play the best of them all. On the bog!

Thanks and congratulations to the Exult team.

well, xu4 and exult are still my goals.  I think I have a decent working xu4 under pdaXrom, but the
exult still gets \"scrolling to the left\" bitrot under the pointer.. and although I\'ve played a good way
through with this, it\'s a royal pita.

I played u3 and u4 when they came out.  I also enjoyed wizardry.

for a quick game, nethack-qt is very nice on the Z ... I haven\'t quite
enjoyed the x11 interface as much as the qt.

I have had the same trouble trying to get exult working on my 5600. I am also a newbe. Please can someone explain to me how to edit the hidden .exult.cfg file? as I need to config this to run from the SD card not the CF card.

Also this user, cgrieves explains using the "vi" command in terminal. Please can someone explain what this command does, and what the exact syntax is that I need to type..

Thanks

nick12288, Get a copy of Zeditor. It's free and is on ELSI
http://www.elsix.org/
It is a text editor that makes it easy to edit .cfg files.
After you install Zeditor, click the icon and hold it and put a check in "Execute with root privilege".
You will now be able to open hidden configuration files and edit/save them.

exult only plays Ultima 7 (and add-ons). check out this site and look for an ultima 2 emulator: [a href=\"http://ultima.rpgdot.com/]http://ultima.rpgdot.com/[/url]
