Jogging With The Z
« on: February 25, 2005, 06:46:32 pm »
What do you think?  Have the C860 and would like to take it on jogs to listen to music.  Besides the obvious - falling and crushing it, or it falling out of a belt strap - do you think the actual act of jogging and the unit being bounced around could potentially damage it?

It should be ok in theory, unless you have a microdrive which may not take too kindly too being jiggered about

Actually I wanted to do that with mine and did a few times but I always worried about breaking it.  Eventually I stopped. Both.
Left Linux and Linux PDAs... sorry, got boring.  Switched to Mac.

I used my SL 5500 for a year to read me text files while I jogged.  I held it in a fanny pack and didn't have any problem.  The only issue that I had was the zaurus would shut down after thirty minutes unless I pressed on of the controls.  If ipods are made for this I don't see why the microdrives wouldn't hold up as well.  If you are worried about microdrive reliability, you should be able to store enough music to keep your self entertained on a 1 or 2 gig flash card.  If you can run longer than that, you have my respect and admiration, but I have no ready solutions for you

Ha ha ha!! Sorry, being immature, fanny has a different meaning here...

I did see a pouch somewhere which wraps around the arm and allows a PDA to be carried while jogging.

A CF card (or MMC/SD) would be best IMHO, I know too many people who have damaged microdrives - even in mp3 players.

But if you don't have that issue, try it.

I was into cycling, my 5500 went everywhere in a bag which could be described as a 'fanny pack' ;-) I did the same with my Clie NX70V, and with my C860 until I came off the bike - I never took it out again. My Yopy does go out all the time, I'd ride with it but probably not jog because of the microdrive I have now.

If you start getting paranoid about damaging your Z, stop.  Do what you feel comfortable with, I just got too paranoid with mine, it cost me a lot of money and I was scared of breaking it - hence why I ditched it.  I'm thinking of getting an iPod shuffle with armband just for the purpose of jogging.

Must be in europe? From what I understand in Europe "fanny" refers to the female genitalia .

Bringing back an old post but does anyone think a Z would be a good jogging buddy if.

1.  You could play music while working out.

2.  Run a GPS program to calculate distance and speed of your run.

I know there are arm bands you can get that have a gps receiver and it will tell you how far and how fast you are running.  Does any one know of a program like that?

Just trying to get the most out of my Z.

Maybe a Nokia 5500D would be a better choice. It's tough enough to take a few knocks - a Russian site did some tests on it:

- put it under running water
- buried it in soil
- dropped it from a height of several metres
- ran over it with a car

and it still worked. They had to run over it a second time before the phone broke

The 5500D has a motion sensor which allows it to work out how far you have walked/jogged and it comes with software which logs this info so you can see how much you have improved over time.

I don't jog with my c860, but that's 'cause I don't jog. I do bicycle with it fastened to my belt pack in the ECGO neoprene case I got for it ... it's belt-and-suspenders secure, with Velcro and a snap.
