3.3.6pre1 on a C750
« on: April 09, 2004, 10:20:38 am »
Just a few notes.

Restarting Opie seems to loose the time, I think I read something about this on the mailing list.

The home key doesn\'t work, other than to switch on - so you can\'t switch to the desktop unless you use the \'start menu\' entry.

There\'s no escape key as far as I can tell. The two hardware buttons on the back of the unit, escape & enter, don\'t seem to be mapped to anything.

The little scroll wheel thingy on the back also doesn\'t seem to be mapped to anything.

Right hand shift key doesn\'t work. Though there is this thread, I\'ll do some digging: (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=548&highlight=shift)

Is there any way to zoom in?

Mail button is mapped to screen rotate (fair enough, but seems a little odd).

Other than that it all seems good, I\'ve got Xqt up and running so I\'ve now got as much functionality as I had with pdaXrom, but with the added advantage of having the Qtopia/Opie apps available, plus decent power management - though I note that the pdaXrom battery meter seemed to be more accurate (it changed more often at least ;-)), has the accuracy patch been left out of the current shepherd 3.3.6pre1 kernel?

The little close and okay buttons on the top right hand side of the window title bars are very small. How do people with simpads get by?  Actually ignore that, thinking about it I suppose there may be another theme I can install which will make them bigger.

Off to trawl the mailing list archive.....

Lardman,
Thanks for posting your observations. I have been interested in trying OpenZaurus, but have been afraid to due to the impression that it is currently unstable on the Cxxx series. Have you run into any stability problems so far? Another issue for me is ease of use for a linux noob. How does OZ compare in this area?

It seems quite stable to me, the only issues are that if you restart opie/reboot (I can\'t work out which one does the \'damage\') you loose the time - but I don\'t have to do either very often, if I want to update the desktop there\'s a qcop command which you can issue from the terminal (don\'t know what it is off the top of my head, but I\'m looking now).

One other thing, the usb connection seems a little flakey - I can plug in and Windows tells me that it\'s not recognised, to fix this I was rebooting (and loosing the time), but I\'ve now written a pair of scripts (actually they are the same ones which are in my usb-storage package for the 5600) which I can run to enable storage or enable net which sorts this out. I don\'t know what causes it.

There are certainly no lock-ups or the like in any case, and after installing the compat-libs everything is working fine. I do note, however, that a couple of the apps which came pre-installed died with segfaults (opierec is the only one I remember) - this wasn\'t a problem for me as I don\'t want to use them anyway but it is an indication that there are a few opie apps out there which still have issues (there was a thread about segfaults in 3.3.6pre1 on the 5500 which will probably indicate the problematic ones)

I think OZ is fairly easy to use as a noob, it\'s certainly can be more complex than the original Sharp ROMs, but you don\'t need to mess around with the command line unless you want to. I\'d go for it, this way you\'ll learn as you go along (always the best way imho).

All in all it\'s very good.

lardman,

Would you recommend OZ over cacko or pdaxrom?

The only missing oz apps would be equivalents of hancom word and sheet but I may be able to live with that. I am keen to have more variety of apps than on the sharp.

Could you tell me what xqt is too?

I am worried about not being able to get back to the sharp rom or bricking my 750 but everyone else seems to have done it ok!

Thanks,

Mark,

I don\'t know about cacko in any case and can\'t recommend anything not knowing what you want to do, but for me OZ is easier to live with than pdaXrom (in terms of power management especially) and can do all I would want (from X11) using Xqt.

I\'ve not bothered yet, but I assume Hancom Work and Sheet should work (taken from an original 5500 2.xx ROM) if you use the compat libs (they do on my 5500 with OZ3.3.6pre1 anyway).

Xqt basically gives you an X environment inside Opie (the OZ GUI), this is in a window which you can switch away from (to do other stuff, like open your calendar, etc.). Inside this window it\'s just like running X on a desktop, multiple windows (all inside the Opie window, which can be full screen BTW) etc. There are two good threads about it in the General Chat section, one entitled Xqt and another from a similar time asking and giving instructions on how to get it working.

Good luck and let me know what you decide and how you get on,
