Both green and amber lights went on at reboot - what to do?
« on: January 06, 2004, 08:06:58 pm »
Ummm... I just was trying to get my bluetooth CF card working with my 5500, as stated in the following thread:
http://www.zaurususergroup.com/index.php?n...viewtopic&t=979

I then did a reboot, and my Z has been sitting in the cradle with a lit up (but empty) screen and both the amber and green lights lit up for about 20 minutes, as if it is performing a ROM update.  The bluetooth card is plugged into the CF slot.

I\'m afraid to move the thing as I\'ve read that much can go wrong during a ROM upgrade (although I have NO idea how that would have started from clicking \'reboot\' in the GUI).  Can the lights being on mean something else?  Anyone had this happen or think that it is OK to remove it and pop the battery compartment button whlie these lights are on?!?

Thanks in advance - N8

If you don\'t have a CF memory card inserted into the Z, with the proper ROM files on the CF card, there is no way the Z can be performing a ROM update.  The only other way you can do a ROM update is with a windows box using the ROM Updater utility.  But this would require a deliberate action on your part.

Have you recently downloaded email to the Z and not read thru the new messages?  That would leave the mail indicator light on, and of course with the Z in the cradle, I would assume the power is plugged into it.

I would give it a few minutes to see what happens, then flip the switch on the back if it doesn\'t boot up.

Thanks for the quick response.  I just removed it from the cradle and flipped the battery switch, and it had no effect - the mail light stayed on (the power off as it was removed from the cradle) and the screen is still lit up (grey).  Is it safe to pull the battery out to kill it?  I certainly haven\'t used the email app since my last rom update, so it can\'t be email or a calendar event.

Have you by any chance done 2 reboots in a row without a suspend in between?

yes? then you will have to do a hard reset (little button in the back of your battery compartment). Your machine is not trying to flash, it\'s just screwed.

This is an old bug with the sharp rom, and one that lost most of my hair.

The tkcrom gets round this by issuing a suspend when you do a reboot.  It seems a bit odd at first when you reboot, and it turns off. you press the cancel button to turn it on and then it continues with the reboot.

As a general rule, if you reboot your 5500, always press the suspend button after it has booted, then press it again to power it back on, you will then not experience the above problem.

It\'s a nasty bug as you have to restore your /home partition on a 5500 as it is held in ram.

It doesn\'t seem to happen on the cl760 or the oz rom on a 5500.

Ahhhh... The ol\' double reboot bug, eh?  I guess I\'ll just go back to the backup that I THANKFULLY made today!  Thanks for letting me know about it.

It\'s scary the first time it happens.
It then rappidly becomes annoying when you do it again.  And you will do, I can guarantee it

\"I have just added the latest x driver, lets see if it still works after a reboot. Oooh bugger forgot about that, where is that reset switch again?\"

Like I say, thank god they fixed it on the cl760 otherwise I would be bald now.

No, it won\'t happen again I\'m hoping, as I just switched to tkcROM based on your response to my other post!

AFAIK the tkcROM just has my Safeboot script in it, which can be installed separately:

Thanks for the update - I grabbed the Safeboot ipk just in case I go back to the Sharp ROM; the double reboot problem is pretty disastrous!
