Synch W/ Korganizer (ko/pi)
« on: December 22, 2004, 05:30:32 pm »
Okay,
I have been having trouble synching at work w/outlook.  (W2k server machine). I am unable to download my z software because of permission issues (from IT). Anyways, to make a long story short. I have found this great proggie called Outlook2Vcal .  This program will take your calendar info, and put it into a vcal which Korganizer uses. I can then d/l that straight to my Z (I do it w/ IR-beam) and then I can synch or just load the vcal data.  This is the best for me, cuz it is fastest for me.  I need to synch at work, cuz that is where all my data is created, and I have to use Outlook.  anyways... I haven't seen it talked about here so if this helps anyone who has to do the linux/windows thingy - great!

Hey, thanks for the tip!

Here is what I'm doing now:

1. Use this http://outport.sourceforge.net/ to export Calendar to an .ics file (Evolution Calendar format).
2. Delete the mycalendar.ics file from korganizer on the Z and REPLACE it directly with this file.

It seems to work great. I have an identical working copy of my Outlook calendar on my Z. Just no way to put appointments from my Z back to outlook.

The only question I have is, "When will the alarm program catch on to the replaced ICS file?" I might have to restart it or something.

Anyway, this may free me from Sharp's Calendar app! Very cool. Thanks for the tip. I'm now "testing" Ko/Pi. I hope it works out.

FYI,

the windows versions of KO/Pi and KA/Pi have an "Import from Outlook" menu entry, which imports the data from Oulook much better than the previous methods.

Well, the question is, which is easier to do on a daily basis?

The Outlook->Windows Ko/Pi->Zaurus Ko/Pi seems complicated, but then my method isn't simple either.

I'll give them both a try. I'll be very happy if I can find Ko/Pi to permanently replace the Sharp PIM's.

Since we are talking convoluted setups...

The DoD doesn't allow people to use their personal PDAs on government computers so this is how I keep things together.

I export my calendar and notes to a .pst file and take it home on my usb keychain, then import it into my outlook and sync with my Z, then I reverse the procedure to get my Z data onto my PC at work.

Wow.

I am impressed that the KoPi and KaPi files are both just very simple human readable text files.

I actually think it might not be that hard to build a program to syncronize outlook to these files using Python.

I plan to start working on it, but who knows if I'll ever finish it.

I do need to check my reminders though. My Z went off at midnight to tell me that I have to day off today.   I may have had that set in Outlook too though, not sure.

You might want to contact zautrix.  He may have some insights.

EDIT: you can ignore this. I seem to have cleaned out the "BAD" appointments. For some reason some appointments in my calendar are just naughty.

That said, I've managed to create somewhat of a kobbled "sync" system with exporting and comparing the old files. Uses batch files and python. Rather messy.

The next big "leap" I need is to be able to export outlook data from the command line instead of having to use the KO/pi and KA/pi and Outport GUI's.

ORIGINAL MESSAGE:

I installed KO/pi 1.9.14 on Windows and attempted to import my OL calendar.

It crashes kopi.exe with a "MS Visual C++ Runtime Libarary" "Runtime Error"

It seems to be certain appointments causing it. I can import another calendar where I just set up a few test appointments.

I tried going through all of mine to find the bad ones, and thought I had them becasue it worked, but I guess another appointment "went bad" in about 10 minutes and then it quit working agian.

Techno,

I had the exact same idea.  I would love to first get my work PC and home PC sync'd.  Especially when I change commands.  Everytime I transfer I have to re-build my personal contacts.  It is riduculous in this day and age.  I would just like to sync between my PC at work and my PC at home.  I haven't made the complete jump to Linux at home yet, although with my new Zaurus, I am rapidly approaching that point.  But I digress.

I figured out how to get a copy of my .pst file from the exchange server and of course took it home on my USB drive.  But I had problems opening it in my Outlook at home.  I thought that it should be pretty straight forward.  It has been awhile, I had kind of given up, but I will try it again today, so I can be more specific.  If I can do that, I can get the sync going between my home PC and my Zaurus.  I am looking into the KO/Pi solution now.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ok, I sort of figured it out.  I was trying to use a .ost (offline folder).  That is why it wouldn't open.  But today I used the export and exported my contacts and calendar to .pst files.  Then I imported them at home.  Worked perfectly.

Now Techno, if you know how to get a copy of my .pst from the Exchange server, let me know, although the main things to me were calendar, contacts and tasks.  Of course I can do that now, but in three different files.  Convoluted, but works.  And maybe not a bad thing, 'cuz if I learn Visual Basic (always good to learn something new), I can write a macro to automate the sync.  But that is a future project.

Now I have to get my Outlook data into my Zaurus and my Mandrake (Kontact PIM) on my desktop.  After that, no more having to look in 3 or 4 places for that phone number.....But at least I can get everything from work to home and vice versa.
