Opie Reader Problems After Cacko Upgrade
« on: January 03, 2005, 04:08:13 pm »
I was using Opie Reader with great success and much satisfaction for plucked scriptures and other ebooks on cacko 2.21 on my c860.  It was great- a completely painless transition from a Palm T3, even using the same data files!  After updating to cacko 2.22 i tried installing reader 0.7h directly from the developer's page.  It opened up rotated, so i uninstalled it and installed the package from the cacko feeds.  This one (it says 0.6j) opened up with the correct rotation, but i'm having troubles now with the same plucker file i was using before.  I can't get it to display footnotes properly, and all the inbuilt fonts i was using previously are not displaying the same size as before.  Finally, and most importantly, scrolling is dog slow.

I didn't install Opie Reader previously because i bought the Z used, so i don't know what version it was using (i think package manager said 1.0.3 or something rather unlikely like that), but it says on the developer page that rotation is broken in the current version, so i imagine that's why the newest version wouldn't work right for me.

So my question is, is there a newer version that will fix these problems but still work with my c860?

Try http://www.timwentford.uklinux.net/opie-reader_0.7h_arm.ipk or, if that doesn't work at all, http://www.timwentford.uklinux.net/opie-re...ic_0.7h_arm.ipk

The incorrectly sized fonts are probably due to using a version compiled for opie on a Sharp type rom.

There are a variety of scroll types which you can use. The fastest is in-place (set it by using the spanner/wrench icon to open up the settings dialog and going to the misc tab).

If you prefer the "Rolling" scroll, use the "Moving background" version.

There is a rotation function in opie-reader itself. IIRC it is under the view dialog so make sure that is set to what you want.

You can e-mail me directly at timwentford@hotmail.com if you need any more specific advice.

Oh, and you do know that you can change the speed of the scroll by pressing whichever keys you have mapped to increase/decrease scroll?

Thanks Tim for the fast response and great app.  I tried using the 0.7h ipk again (the same one you linked), and after crashing once with weird screen artifacts, it behaved differently this time.  After setting it to not run in magnified mode, it works (and looks) better than it ever did with the older version i had installed before the ROM upgrade!

The page up/down speed is about back to where it was before, too, which is a relief.  When i said it was scrolling slowly, i meant that it took about ten seconds to do a page down or page up.

The instructions for which program (IPK) is needed on your page are a bit confusing, which is why i was trying the n00bie route- the feed especially for my ROM.

Is/does Opie Reader going to support external links in Plucker documents as per the new spec?

Thanks again for a program that contributes to making my Z a superior replacement for the Palm.

I try to keep up with Plucker developments and the main thing currently missing (that I know of) is support for tables. I'm not overly keen on the way tables work in Plucker but it may be a misunderstanding of how it works since I haven't ever seen it actually work on a Palm.

As for external links, there is support for external links in opie-reader already but I wasn't aware of the changes for external links (maye it happened when I was in hospital). I'll try and get the latest specs and have a look...it shouldn't be difficult as it already works in html and related formats. Let me know if you are interested in trying it out for me when I get it done.
