You need Gaim:

Quote
Gaim for Qtopia is a multi-protocol instant messaging client for the Qtopia and OPIE embedded environments, found on the Sharp Zaurus and iPaq PDAs running Linux. It is compatible with AIM (using the Oscar protocols), ICQ, MSN Messenger, Yahoo, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, Napster, and Trepia networks.

http://qpe-gaim.sourceforge.net/

It's also free and works great.

If you're going that high, maybe you want a soft case within a hard case.

My sister's 5500 and my 760 each use soft one from www.thepouch.com.

Does the current version of gaim work correctly with Yahoo and MSN?  On my linux pc I had to update gaim to the most recent version for Yahoo to work.
SL5500 running nothing.  Will not hold a charge.  =(

As far as my experience goes, it does not work at all on the Sharp ROMs on the 5600. It simply will not save the accounts, prefs and other things, and spits out a console error. I already posted about this about a month back, and got no response that solved the problem. Heck, I'm even running Qtopia as root and it can't write the files.

If anyone does have a solution, or has qpe-gaim working, mind telling me your setup to see if I can figure out what's wrong?

mm well thats odd when i click on the icon it acts like its going to load and does nothing.    and i see the pc link comes on in the taskmanager

it may be b/c it tells you to do this

Installing Gaim for Qtopia is a pretty easy task, but it has a few steps initially. For a less verbose list of what's needed, see requirements below.

Step 1.

Before you start, add the following feed to your package manager:

http://qpe-gaim.sourceforge.net/feed/release

and i have no clue as to what they are talking about  package manager?

now thats wierd im online and when i even try a different chat program it also wants to connect to pc link any idea why they are doing that.  even though i'm online could it still be trying to connect through the usb somehow?

it is trying to open  " 2125 qtsamba"   whats that the progam is

.
.
.
updated i was messing with the pclink stuff and changed it to advanced and left the settings now  its up and running but dont see anyone i'll mess with it some more.  maybe this is helpfull to someone else
.
.
.
hmm ok yea had to keep messing with the settings on pc link for it to go online and i have all my buddy icons for this other program.

but as far as Gaim goes it still doesnt open up it just acts like its opening up. i get no responce from it,
so i could use some suggestions for Gaim if anyone has some

Install a terminal and run it from there. See what the error message says.

In the Settings screen, the thing you use to install packages. Alternatively you can manually edit the ipkg.conf file which lives in /etc (afaicr for your ROM).

.
.
.
ahhh  lol i just typed in gaim in terminal and it tried to start the program but it came back saying   "cannot load shared object file:  no such file or directory"  hmmm anyone know what thats about?  i obviously need a shared object file lol but where and how? lol

there was a filename that i wrote there b/c my computer froze  but anyway i found the file d-loaded it and now Gaim opens but there are no options or buttons to push they are gone like if it was missing something else.  so i uninstalled just gpe-gaim and reinstalled it and nothing changed.

.
.
.
ok now i decided to load from terminal again and i get a bunch of unable to get graphics content cant make qgfx for null mpixmap
or qpaintdevice: cannot destroy paint device that is being painted and  a bunch of other QGFX

Which ROM are you using?

From memory I think the problem of no icons requires that you overwrite the libpng with the one from the web site. Check the FAQ there.

Most of the 'error' messages you were talking about are standard ones - try running 'datebook' for example and compare.

Cannot load shared object file - it didn't give the name of the file? Very odd.

Choose install via networks and it should give you the option to set a new feed.
