I'm not trying to be mean or negative, but I thought "release" meant that a few people had tried things out and not found too many huge problems. OZ 3.5.3 is not usable on my C750.

But it is on mine, and was too using Opie. Very odd.

Quote
It appears that the package manager still has problems installing more that one or two packages at a time. It seg faults or crashes my C750. Furthermore, I can't get it to install to SD. I enter the a path (/media/card/packages) in the config dialog and update descriptions and when I try to install the only choice is still root (/). Yes, my SD card was mounted.

I think there are still some issues with the GUI package manager.

Not sure about using the GUI app, as I never do, but I'd add your card entry to /etc/ipkg.conf as 'dest card /media/card/'.

Quote
There is something very odd with suspend. Sometimes when the C750 wakes up I get an error about a very low battery. But the battery is almost fully charged. Often, the C750 does not wake up and becomes unresponsive, requiring a reboot (battery removal).

This is something which has just come to light - I presume you're using the 2.6 kernel? It would appear that if a CF card is mounted (or inserted - I need to do some more testing) when you stry to suspend, the Z doesn't actually suspend. More testing would be nice as this is just something I stumbled upon not so long ago.

Quote
Sometimes the C750 freezes solid when messing with the network config dialog. I have a Netgear MA701 card. Since the card is autodetected without a problem, I have stayed away from the Network config dialog.

I've never seen this. Is it opie which is freezing or the whole thing?

Quote
Why aren't the default fonts a bit larger? Or at least there should be some larger fonts installed by default. I use opie-reader a lot and it is painful even with the biggest preinstalled tiny fonts.

I thought they were reasonably large - I had 16pt (iirc) in the terminal which is pretty big.

Quote
There is no obvious way to make the microscopic tray icons bigger. It is just about impossible to
tap the right one.

I don't find them a problem - but yours is a valid point - add it to the bug tracker as a feature request - zooming taskbar, etc.

I think you can already zoom the taskbar, though not interactively. The size of the bar is set in (IIRC) qpe.conf. A quick disclaimer though, I haven't actually tried this yet as I haven't got around to getting 3.5.3 and even if I had I con't have a clamshell.

Anyone know whether enlightenment is usable yet?  It looks like it requires X.  Should I start from the bootstrap image or from GPE?

My fonts are pretty large as is my taskbar. Obviously you didn't want to waste your precious time reading the detailed release notes. Obviously I won't waste time to tell you how to fix it.
[div align=\"right\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Mikey,

Where are the detailed relase notes?

I've found these for 3.5.1 on the OZ Site:

[a href=\"http://openzaurus.org/web/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=25&Itemid=44]http://openzaurus.org/web/index.php?option...id=25&Itemid=44[/url]

And these which mention 3.5.3 but do not contain anything about font sizes on the OpenEmbedded site:
http://openembedded.org/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/O...rusReleaseNotes

Is there another set somewhere that I've not found a link to?
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=75295\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

He must be referring to this line, at the bottom of the referenced document, in the device specific section for the "clamshell" models:

Quote
the root directory for opie-image is /home/root/ now. It is useful to remove /home/root/Settings before installing to make sure you get the new configuration defaults

Of course, the font/taskbar size problem also applies to the 6000. It would be helpful to call this out, and perhaps to mention font problems as a key to users who may not be able to guess at the connection.

I could wish for a less arrogant attitude towards users, too. Basic civility would be served, but so would the cause of producing releases that are more oriented toward the user.

The converse it also true, the initial post was not written in a very constructive way IMO, it sounded as if he was just complaining that we'd released software which he couldn't get working (without offering much by way of extra info to try to track down the problems, etc.).

We all do this for free - and assuming it works okay for us, the presumption is that it should work for others too - the only way to make OZ better is for our users to try it out and give helpful, constructive criticism (both about the software and the docs - clarity is one significant aspect of this, especially when it's users who are not as familiar with everything as we are).

So, please do sontinue sending bug reports (with useful info of course ), and suggestions/amendments to the docs, etc. (though in a different thread, as this is just the release announcement thread)

Regards,

The install instructions say:

NOTE: OpenZaurus does not work on models with repartioned space, i.e. if you have pdaXrom on, you need to repartion to the standard Sharp split _before_ installing OpenZaurus

I want to have a look and see how OZ is going, so I'm charging up the battery on the 700. Anyone know what the default flash partition is for the 700?

Thanks,

Mike.

Yeah, I found it works best to flash back to "factory fresh" before flashing to OZ. (despite the risk of damage to the z)

You should see a gpe splash screen. It sounds like your kernel wasn't updated. That would work very very badly, at best.

make sure when you flash you see it update the kernel and the ro filesystem both.

Just wanted to say Great job Mickey and everyone else.  I feel like you really did a superb job of addressing all the bugs and problems I posted about 3.5.2, and this version is a big step.

Kudos!

Great work guys....  3.5.3. is great, looks really nice, great step forward.

Got two questions:
1. Anyone got Kaffee  working on a SL5500, seems to be a few things it needs missing from the feeds (I've added the machine specific feed).
2. When I install things to the SD card the Package Manager seems to have a real problem creating links for files.  It's ok if the folder already exists, but doesn't seem to be able to create new folders.  I've installed Opie-Symlink, which seems to have fixed alot of the problems.  If you manually create the links things work fine though...

Hello,

after the flash update with following files (of course all renamed according to instructions):

opie-image-akita-20050427214434.rootfs.img
zImage-akita-20050427214434.bin
updater.sh

Opie wouldn't start because of  problems with reading the libraries:

>>/opt/QtPalmtop/bin/qpe: error while loading shared libraries: libts-0.0.so.0:cannot open shared object file. No such file or directory.<<

I have read in this forum, some more experienced users as I am were able to update the Touch Screen libs / correct the paths around the qpe2 lib. Could somebody give me a hint were to start?

I recently installed 3.5.3 on my c1k and initially had problems with libraries not being found on boot. Turned out that the initrd was incomplete - the download had terminated early.

When I tried to download another copy it took me three attempts to get the whole file intact, so check the filesizes to be sure.

Once I got the entire file it booted straight in without a problem.
