Openzaurus 3.5.3
« on: April 13, 2005, 10:27:51 am »
Release notes:

======================================================

On behalf of the OpenEmbedded, OpenZaurus, Opie and GPE teams, I am proud to present to you the
third OpenZaurus release based on the BitBake build system and the OpenEmbedded metadata repository.

The highlights of this release are:

o Linux Kernel 2.6.11 for Opie and Bootstrap images for C7x0
o Updated many packages, and greater package selection
  o Changed ipkg destinations:
Packages are now installed into a 'packages' subdirectory on external
media. /etc/ipkg.conf can be altered if this behaviour is not desired
  o ipkg-link now reads /etc/ipkg.conf:
No longer a need to edit ipkg-link when destination paths are changed
        in /etc/ipkg.conf
o Corrected error in c7x0 fstab:
Booting on a c7x0 with an SD or MMC card inserted should work correctly
o Various corrections to keymaps for all machines have been made:
        More keys should function correctly
o Suspend/resume issues on collie when using GPE have been fixed:
collie now resumes correctly after suspending via the On/Off button
o Improved SD and MMC card mounting:
Cards with multiple partitions are supported and should mount
        correctly
  o Improved boot process:
        Less unintelligible messages during startup
  o oz-compat has been renamed to sharp-compat-libs
o Many more improvements specifically in C7x0 and SL6000 support in Opie and GPE,
see gpe.handhelds.org and opie.handhelds.org for details

This release supports the following Sharp Zaurus models:

5000,5500,5600,6000
B500
C700,C750,C760,C860

C3000 and C1000 support is under construction and scheduled for OpenZaurus 3.5.4. You can help to speed it up
by donating money and/or devices to our developers. Compare to other open source projects we receive
very few donations although we spend a lot of precious spare time and deliver a lot of good work. So if you
are regularly using OpenZaurus, consider to donate and visit http://openzaurus.org/web/index.php?option...id=16&Itemid=45

See http://openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.5.3/changelog.txt for an overwhelming list of changes since OpenZaurus 3.5.2.
See http://openembedded.org/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/O...rusReleaseNotes for important notes _before_ you install OpenZaurus
3.5.3.
See http://openzaurus.org/web/index.php...id=70&Itemid=44 for
Installation instructions.

More information about the overall project status and roadmap can be found in the next edition of the
OOO Newsletter coming in May 2005.

Cheers,

Michael 'Mickey' Lauer

For the sl6000 (tosa) users out there:

The instructions on oz.org are wrong atm. So do the following instead:

in http://www.openzaurus.org/official/unstable/3.5.3/sl6000/

Rename the kernel, zImage-tosa-20050409225341.bin to zImage.bin

Choose one of the ROM images:

bootstrap-image-tosa-20050409225341.rootfs.jffs2
gpe-image-tosa-20050409225341.rootfs.jffs2
opie-image-tosa-20050409225341.rootfs.jffs2

Rename it to initrd.bin

Stick the initrd.bin, zImage.bin and updater.sh (from the above directory) on your CF card, then follow the instructions from step 7 (Connect AC adapter to your Zaurus SL-6000 handheld.)

Outdated instructions here (but you still need to follow the end of them):
http://openzaurus.org/web/index.php?option...id=32&Itemid=44

Cheers,

Unless I'm a total idiot, WEP encrypted wireless is still broken.  I don't understand, I had it working perfectly fine with the pre3.5.3-gpe image, but it breaks with the 3.5.3-opie image?  That makes no sense.

I'm hoping someone can tell me I'm just a moron and typed something in wrong, because it'd be quite annoying to see a problem half fixed like that.

Also, without WEP wireless, OZ is useless for me, so if I sound a bit annoyed, that's why.

Hmm, I think WEP is working for me atm with WinXP (3.5.3 GPE on C750).

Best start a new topic about it rather than clutter what ought to just be an announcement.

/official/unstable/3.5.3/c7x0,c8x0/INSTALL
please correct the
"rename kernel image to 'zimage.bin'"
to
"rename kernel image to 'zImage.bin'"
which I think is the correct. If things are different here ignore my post and tel me to delete it

fat16 is not case sensitive - I don't think it matters what case the filename is in.

I'm not trying to be mean or negative, but I thought "release" meant that a few people had tried things out and not found too many huge problems.  OZ 3.5.3 is not usable on my C750.

It appears that the package manager still has problems installing more that one or two packages at a time. It seg faults or crashes my C750.  Furthermore, I can't get it to install to SD.  I enter the a path (/media/card/packages) in the config dialog and update descriptions and when I try to install the only choice is still root (/).  Yes, my SD card was mounted.

There is something very odd with suspend.  Sometimes when the C750 wakes up I get an error about a very low battery. But the battery is almost fully charged.  Often, the C750 does not wake up and becomes unresponsive, requiring a reboot (battery removal).

Sometimes the C750 freezes solid when messing with the network config dialog.  I have a Netgear MA701 card.  Since the card is autodetected without a problem, I have stayed away from the Network config dialog.

Why aren't the default fonts a bit larger? Or at least there should be some larger fonts installed by default.  I use opie-reader a lot and it is painful even with the biggest preinstalled tiny fonts.

There is no obvious way to make the microscopic tray icons bigger.  It is just about impossible to
 tap the right one.

I just switched to OZ3.5.3/GPE on C750.
Congratulations to everybody involved, OZ is very very nice.

I would like to ask: what is the reason that the GPE image ships with the 2.4 kernel while the other two ship with the 2.6 kernel? Can we expect an updated image with the new kernel, or this will have to wait until OZ 3.5.4?

X/GPE has problems with 2.6 - no idea about what exactly needs fixing. If you want to help, head over to #oe on irc.freenode.net.

My fonts are pretty large as is my taskbar. Obviously you didn't want to waste your precious time reading the detailed release notes. Obviously I won't waste time to tell you how to fix it.

Mikey,

Where are the detailed relase notes?

I've found these for 3.5.1 on the OZ Site:

[a href=\"http://openzaurus.org/web/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=25&Itemid=44]http://openzaurus.org/web/index.php?option...id=25&Itemid=44[/url]

And these which mention 3.5.3 but do not contain anything about font sizes on the OpenEmbedded site:
http://openembedded.org/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/O...rusReleaseNotes

Is there another set somewhere that I've not found a link to?

re the zImage.bin / zimage.bin thing.

oddly enough, I couldn't flash the kernel from a fat16 cf using zImage.bin.
on renaming to zimage.bin (lowercase i ) it worked fine.
voodoo.

and..please.. no chorus of "..trust the documennntaaationnnn luuuuke......the wikkiiii is wiith youuuuu"
