Yes Another One Of Those "what Should I Get" Posts
« on: July 06, 2005, 12:49:09 am »
EDIT: So that I dont sound like a retard, the reason for wanting to use gprs to access wap sites on the Z instead of my phone is because my phone does not support all the features of the TDW wap site

First of all, very informative forum, been reading it for the past 3 hrs or so while trying to decide whether to get the C1000 or C3100 and it answered a LOT of my initial questions.

This will be my first PDA and I am a novice to linux (debian on fujitsu p-2010 and dsl on ibm thinkpad 600e)

Basically all I want in a PDA is:

1) Good battery life
2) Ability to view divx/xvid files
3) listen to mp3s
4) get on 802.11b or gprs for email and stock charts/quotes
5) use TDWaterhouse Premier/Platinum website (java)
6) If #5 is not possible, use a WAP browser (Opera i believe has WAP support) to access my TDW acct
7) Ability to overclock just in case

Clarifications of the above points:

1) Currently, I use tmobile gprs on my phones wap browser to access tdwaterhouse's wap sites to view quotes and trade during the day when im not on my desktop or laptop.  I need something that can access the web from 10am to 4pm, or at least 4-5 hrs on full charge (gprs via irda if im not within the range of a 802.11 ap).  The C1000 according to Sharp seems to last anywhere from 30mins to 1.5 hrs more than the C3100 depending on the usage.  Is the C3100 enough to last me 4-5 hrs at the lowest LCD brightness?

2) Seems like the Cx000 can play movies at 15-29 fps at reasonable resolutions.  Now, the question is, am I better off with the C1000 and a SD card or the C3100 with  the 4gb microdrive?  I figure I wont have more than 1-2gb of movies and music for storage at any given time.   What I want to know is, does having the C1000 with a 2gb SD have better access speed (for both apps and movies) and battery life than a microdrive?

5) TDWaterhouse has some tools that require java... anyone ever tried TDW Bridge or even BigCharts java for that matter on NetFront/Opera/Firefox on the Z?  Also, how much of a pain is it to read websites on the Z?  worse/same than a 640x480 resolution on a standard monitor?

7) I read that the C3000 is overclockable... how about the C1000?

Price is not much of a concern, but battery life is.  If anything, please let me know if storing apps on a SD on the C1000 is slower/faster than C3100 microdrive (and whether it makes an impact on battery life), and whether there really is a big difference in battery lives of the two models in real world situations.

Thanks in advance!

Evan

Hi,
if anyone have any other experiences about that, correct me
You'll have some problems with the Zaurus for 4, 5, 6
4 : and stock charts/quotes
i know that stock quotes generally uses java technologies in web pages, i don't know any java plugin even for firefox... but, maybe you can acces directly to the applet, then that will be ok, but work needed
if your quote uses flash, that is a lot more complicated as the flash port on linux is very bad
5 : same as above, lack of good java plugin for browsers
6 : i don't know if opera embedded support WAP, but you can certainly find another program for that in different repositories

ok, as i "flame" the zaurus, i just like to add that you'll have the same problems with a pocketpc, and maybe, you'll have a lot more problems, and maybe an impossibility. Witch is more rare in the Z

Hmmm...I wonder if the X based roms would have any more functionality that the sharp ones?  For example would firefox give him what he needs?
I'm now an iphone user and use my zaurii as serial terminals, perl and shell scripting and when I need 640x480 screens

we talking java or javascript because i thoght they were quite diffrent when it comes to the programs required to run them, last i hear netfront had javascript support

as for overclocking the pxa270 is designed for overclocking and underclocking, i have yet to see a pxa270 rated @ 312Mhz not be able to do 624Mhz, i remmeber hearing that intel gets incredably good yeilds when it comes to xscale silicon but your milage may vary so i wouldnt worry about it
