Zaurus As An Audio Streamer
« on: July 04, 2005, 03:49:25 pm »
My zaurus recently zapped all my data and apps, rebooting in a clean environment. I've noticed at that occasion that I could very well do without a pda that can't reconcile with my work diary.;

Now I have loaded opie but I was thinking it'd be pretty cool to convert the machine to a wireless media streamer. It supposes a media pleayer able to stream from an icecast server and display new song titles with large characters and an easy figertip navigation.

Can anyone advise how to achieve this ? Or discourage me before I waste too much time ?

Thanks in advance

haven't tried with icecast, but firefox+vlc on pdaxrom does shoutcast for me.
I think icecast would work just fine.

there is a static vlc announed here recently, too. don't know if it is for 5500
edit: it is for 5500 sharprom. would need compatlibs, maybe, for oz...though being static, maybe not

There are a few options for OZ:

Opie - opie-mediaplayer2 has a xine backend and should be able to do streaming according to the Opie wiki (you'll need to install extra ipks though), there's also mplayer - I'm not sure what that can do, and vlc (there's the static binary around, or it might be in OE in fact).

GPE - gxine is probably your best bet, it has lots of options for streaming stuff, but I never tried any of it.

I'm afraid I've no idea what icecast is, but you should be able to get it to work, and if it won't, I/we're willing (and happy dare I say  ) to help you get it sorted.

with mplayer in command line form you can use shoutcast pls files.

Code: [Select]
mplayer
kino2 is the gui front end to mplayer.  Though I haven't been able to get pls files to work, manually entering the shoutcast url works (as mentioned previously by ken)
I'm now an iphone user and use my zaurii as serial terminals, perl and shell scripting and when I need 640x480 screens
