Help Requested Installing Wifi Utilities On 5500
« on: September 07, 2005, 01:33:09 pm »
Hi all. I just got a socket CF wireless LAN card for my 5500 that has the Sharp ROM version 3.10.  I have tried to install a sniffer program like Kismet or Wellenreiter but both attempts have failed.

Does anyone have any suggestions about a program that is powerful yet simple to install ?
I am a relative newbie and need clear step-by-step instructions.

The program would have to work with Socket card and the Sharp rom.

Thanks very much.  Long live the Zaurus !

Could you be more specific about why they failed to install? Have you managed to connect to a known wireless point ok via the wireless network wizard? I seem to recall Kismet needs the sudo package installed first.

Half the reason for replying is that I have a similar lack of success on the wifi front.
I'm using a sharp 3.10 ROM, Pretec WiFi card & kismet.
Ignoring kismet for a moment, I can't even get my Z to connect to my home wifi network (belkin f5d7632uk4 with security disabled). I just get "Initializing" shown in the network panel.

I had better luck on my old ROM - certainly Kismet operated ok. I think I had to manually add the pretec card listing into a file somewhere, though I can't recall the details. Also, this time around I followed the howto about installing kistmet on the SD card, but now I run up the Kismet UI I just get "error connecting to server".

Hi Tim.  Sorry to hear about your problems.  My Socket CF card works fine for my Zaurus.  I would suggest that you call Sharp about getting your card to work.  I do know that you can configure the Zautrus to read your network by running the network program.   I am not sure if you need a special driver or config set up for your Crad but Sharp should be able to help.

When I try to run programs like Kismet or Wellenreiter, Wellenreiter doesn't even run.  I also get the error unable to connect to server on Kismet.  When I go to the Kismet site, the install instructions are impossible to understand (geared for techies).

Thanks for contacting me and let me know how it goes.

The Kismet installation quest goes on (an update):

Regarding installing Kismet, I found the link (https://www.timekiller.org/howtos/kismet-5600.html) which seems clear enough to follow.  However I have no idea how to create scripts.
Also, I am not sure if it's compatible with my CF card (Socket).

Does anyone know if there's an updated version converted for the Zaurus?  (I found 2.6)

Hi,  Thanks for responding, howver the program still doesn't work.  I think the problem is the config file kismet.conf.  I am unable to edit it if I install kismet in the default root location.  I tried to install on a SD card but I couldn't figure out how to get it working.

This has been the damn hardest program to install.  I have searched on the web but people have done different things to get it working.

I would really appreciate some help here.

Thanks again.

I am unable to edit it if I install kismet in the default root location.

What are you trying to use to edit the file? I wouldn't use the GUI editor app as iirc it adds line feeds which will break the conf file.

Use the command line, 'su -' to become root and then use vi (you'll have to google for some instructions about that though).

Hi.  I am using the built in text editor to edit the config file.    Which one should I use?

The problem I was having is that I wanted to install the program in root but as having problems editing the config file.   Using su apparently helps.  Alternatively I can install the program on the SD card and then symlink it but I have no clue on how to do that.

I wish there was better documentation out there.

Thanks again for replying.

I'm not sure, but iirc the Sharp GUI text editor adds line feeds (to make the files it produces compatible with Windows) - Linux is not happy about this, so if you save a file using the editor you'll need to remove the line feeds (using dos2unix for example).

That's why I suggested using vi which is a command line editor.

Hi everyone.  I just wanted to give an update about what has happened to me since I started this post.

I did some research online, and it turns out the Socket card doesnt work with the stock Sharp ROM on the Zaurus 5500. The person who wrote this offered advice on installing additional drivers and provided a customised ROM.

[a href=\"http://www.cypherpunks.ca/zaurus/socket.html]http://www.cypherpunks.ca/zaurus/socket.html[/url]

I may look at getting OZ (which apparently works better with sniffers) or the newest Sharp ROM 3.13 (maybe works).

All this customisation and programming for a program is a big hassle.  I may also sell my Socket and get a Pretec instead.
