Any Microdrive Diagnose Tool For Zaurus
« on: April 13, 2006, 10:28:08 am »
I need to diagnose whether there is problem with my Z or the software problem. It's too annoying. If it is a hardware problem, it's still in warranty. Wish it's one kind of software problem.

Thanks.

There may be (can't remember) drive diagnostics in the D+M monitor... some may be destructive tests though so be sure you know how to backup and restore the whole thing before playing with them.

Can't take a look at the moment because my Z is doing a big rebuild of stuff at the moment.

but its a dead link  Have you got one that works? Is there a microdrive testing tool in there?

Indeed there are!

I'd never ran the DM menu until today as I was fully expecting it to be in Japanese like the update (or whatever its called- the one you get by holding down 'OK') menu. Great to be able to understand what I'm choosing/ whats going on. I'm running the HDD bit checksum right now.

EDIT

To do this you must unplug the AC and battery, hold down D + M (Diagnostic Menu)

It must've took about an hour or just less to get a checksum out of it, but it doesn't seem to save it so you have to write it down. There is a complimentary HDD menu option to checksum from a txt file on a disc.

After that there are another couple of options, one being to run a HDD check. I'm about halfway through it now and so far its found 353 RANK A sectors and 160 RANK B- what does RANK B mean? Can these not be repaired?

It took a few hours but my now I have my HDD check results

7999487 sectors checked

RANK A 0537

RANK B 0263

I had a fresh install of pdaXrom b2 on that I could still boot up after the check so it would seem to be non-destructive.

I've searched the forums for "rank b" but I couldn't find anything but this thread on it. My test said OK! and the ranking did go down to I so I would presume that there is actually nothing wrong with my HD, I'd just set something up wrong in pdaXrom (or its a bug in pdaXrom, it is an unofficial beta!)

At least now I know what to run when/if I upgrade or replace the internal HD.
