5600 Serial Cable - console connection
« on: February 16, 2004, 08:22:59 pm »
I\'ve bought a Zthin Serial IO cable (9 pin male) and d/led zaurus console, but when I connect up to the console port of any device I get no response (as if the pinouts are wrong)

Any thoughts, please?

TIA,

Hamilton

Try a null-modem adapter...
Google is your friend, there\'s literally dozens of sites all about the serial side of the Zaurus with diagrams and pin-outs etc etc.

Yup, thanks for that.... but as I said, it all looks fine and dandy, just doesn\'t console into switches   .  Part of my wish list is to get to be able to use the Z. instead of a laptop to configure switches......

I remember a thread about this on the devnet, can\'t remember what the problem was though. Try doing a search on the devnet (you may need to alter your hosts file - see the thread in General Chat).

Do a google search for \"zaurus getty\":  you may need to soft-reset the zaurus,  and change the init level at reboot,  to get the serial port set up the way you want.

Read the boot options carefully:  I just did this routine yesterday to get my GPS connected to my Z,  and dicovered that the menu presented by the Sharp 3.10 ROM didn\'t match the ones on the webpages.  I had to press a different key to get the serial port to come up \"free\".

You probably want the port to be \"free\",  so you can run something like minicom on the Z to use it as a terminal for another system (which is what I think you want to do,  right?).

Hey Ran,

Which GPS card did you get working with the Zaurus?  I need to get one and am looking for suggestions.

I didn\'t buy a card:  I got a Sportrak Map.  Which is looking like a (fortunately not *too* big) mistake:  accessories for it are a real PITA to find at retail,  and it can be a bit difficult to mail-order them when you\'re on the road in an RV  ;-)  I\'ve also since discovered that the salescritter was either mistaken or lying when he told me it was the lowest-cost model with a PC interface.

When you\'re shopping,  be sure to look for comparative reviews that test for differences in sensitivity:  don\'t just trust the manufacturers\' numbers.  I recently read a couple that showed ranges of about 10-to-1 between the best and worst in similarly-priced units.  That\'ll make a huge difference in how reliably it works in situations where surroundings like dense foliage or buildings get in the way of satellite signals.

It would also be good to see whether you can find comparisons between CF and standalone units:  my suspicion is that the cards don\'t have enough room to hold as good an antenna as the maker can put in a handheld or roof-mount receiver.

I\'ve seen a big difference in how many satellites the Sportrak can pick up,  and how strongly,  depending on whether it\'s inside or outside the truck.  So I bouight a Pelikan 1030 box (much like an Otterbox) to make a weatherproof rooftop housing for it.  If you want something for car navigation,  you\'ll probably want to either get a separate gadget,  or one that supports an external antenna.

Maybe the PPP daemon is still running,  and sending those out to say \"Hello,  anybody there?\"?

Or not:  I\'ve never looked into how the two ends negotiate a connection,  but it seems like at least one side has to do something like that to get the ball rolling.
