Cf Wifi Card Experts Please!
« on: January 26, 2005, 10:14:47 am »
Hello all,

Great site, first post, any help is is appreciated.

I thought I did my research before I went out and bought a wireless card but apparently I didn't do enough ;-(

I have been trying to get a Zonet ZCF 1100 CF 802.11b 11 Mbps card to work on the newest Sharp ROM 3.10, Linux Kernel 2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embedix. This is on a Zaurus 5500-SL

I followed this article: http://www.zaurususergroup.org/ProdReviews...ent-id-23.phtml

and this

http://www.zaurususergroup.org/ProdReviews...ent-id-24.phtml

Sorry for all the output in advance, I thought It would help.....

When I restart pcmcia services with: /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia restart
and remove the card here is the last bit of output from dmesg:

This function is not support     411c
sa1100_pcmcia_init(0)

What I know:

The only thing I know is that if I modify anything but the pcmcia config I don't get the card detected. I have read articles that say to modify the wlan-ng.conf file, when I do this I don't get positive results. The orinoco_cs is the only thing that has given me detection in Qtopia.

I don't know what the orinoco_cs is or how to obtain it if I need it. Some websites say that the Prism devices need the hostap_cs driver, I know this card is a Prism I device so I don't know.

In Qtopia's network app, under the "current" tab it shows my MAC address when the card is plugged in but says "No connection defined"
when I pull it out it displays: No available service.

My accesspoint is an Apple Graphite original 802.11b router, I use Freebase to configure it for my IBM laptop. I have encryption turned off for the 5500. Where I sit I get a good signal from the AP via the laptop

The only modules that I have seen on the Zaurus under:
/home/root/modules/2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-embedix/pcmcia are
memory_cs.o    prism2_cs.o    sharpzdc_cs.o

I appreciate any help that you can give-thanks in advance

When I add a standard LAN - TCP/IP connection, it says "offline" in Qtopia when I remove the LAN connection and the Wireless LAN TCP/IP connection remains the status changes to "No connection defined".

It seems that my Zaurus is treating this Wifi card as if it were a LAN card. I have heard of this happening to someone who then reordered things in his spectrum.conf file but mine looks like this:

device "spectrum_cs"
#  class "network" module "hermes", "orinoco", "spectrum_cs"
class "spectrum" module "hermes", "orinoco", "spectrum_cs"

card "LA4100 Spectrum24 CF WLAN Card"
  manfid 0x026c, 0x0001
  bind "spectrum_cs"

card "Socket Communications CF+ LP WLAN Card"
  manfid 0x0104, 0x0001
  bind "spectrum_cs"

cardctl ident gives the following output:

Socket 0:
  product info: "WLAN", "11Mbps_PC-Card_3.0", "ISL37100P", "Eval-RevA"
  manfid: 0x000b, 0x7100
  function: 6 (network)
------------------------------------------------------------------

/etc/pcmcia/config file has this added under wireless network adapters section:

card "Zonet CF WLAN"
  manfid 0x000b, 0x7100
  bind "orinoco_cs"

-----------------------------------------------------------

Cardctl ident is telling you the problem:
your Zonet WLAN card shares the same manfid as the network card it is being recognized as.

This happens frequently among the low cost manufacturers, who, rather than applying to the CF Association for their own ID, simply invent or borrow what they think is a non- or seldom-used ID.  I experienced the same problem with my TrendNet Ethernet card, which was being recognized as a memory card.

The solution is to edit /etc/pcmcia/config (as root) and either move the entry for your card above the other one, or comment out the entry for the wrong card.  After editing the config file, you either need to reboot, or run this command as root:
Code: [Select]
kill -HUP `cat /var/run/cardmgr.pid`(notice those are backticks)

I truely wished that worked for me. I searched /etc/pcmcia/config and wlan-ng.conf for entries that looked like the cardctl ident output I couldn't find any. The only info I found was the info I had put in there to begin with. In wlan-ng.conf a commented out line that I put there:

#card "Zonet ZCF 1100 CF WLAN Card"
#  version "WLAN", "11Mbps_PC-Card_3.0", "ISL37100P", "Eval-RevA"
#  bind "prism2_cs"

and in the config (which i tried to move above other entries)

card "Zonet CF WLAN"
  manfid 0x000b, 0x7100
  bind "orinoco_cs"

Is there some config file that cardmanager is referencing? I have no idea.

although I have a love for tinkering with linux and its many forms I just opted to RMA the thing back to newegg and get a linksys wcf12. I hope I have better luck with this card as it shows that it is supported here:
