is there a 5500 that has....
« on: September 27, 2004, 10:22:34 am »
Qtopia removed/X11 replaced
blackbox/fluxbox/icewm (1 of them)
filesystem on sd/cf card
writeable root
easy usb configuration
full sd/cf support
sound and midi libraries/drivers (libSDL)
integrated wlan drivers
libc2.3.2
full compatibility with pdaxrom apps
built in ftp/ssh
minimal apps, nothing comes installed except configuration utilities

I am looking for something like this for my 5500. its wishful thinking really, I would really love something like this. I wish pdaXrom was for the 5500, but from the looks of it, dones't seem like thats going to happen.

The closest things I could think of were the debian and gentoo ports, but I am unaware as to how far they progressed.
I'm now an iphone user and use my zaurii as serial terminals, perl and shell scripting and when I need 640x480 screens

OZ3.5.1 with GPE

Quote
Qtopia removed/X11 replaced

Yep.

Quote
blackbox/fluxbox/icewm (1 of them)

Matchbox actually, but from your list you sound like you just want a wm. You/someone could always add it to oe.

Quote
filesystem on sd/cf card

This can be done.

Quote
writeable root

Yep.

Quote
easy usb configuration

What do you mean? Seems easy enough to me.

Quote
full sd/cf support

Not sure what you mean, but it certainly works for all of my cards and devices.

Quote
sound and midi libraries/drivers (libSDL)

Don't know about this, sorry.

Quote
integrated wlan drivers

Yep.

Quote
libc2.3.2

Yep.

Quote
full compatibility with pdaxrom apps

This is not possible with the 5500 as pdaXrom apps are compiled using ARM5; this is incompatible with the ARM4 SA processor on the 5500. I believe that pdaXrom apps will run on the C machines using GPE, so this is part way there I suppose ;-)

built in ftp/ssh

Not ftp, ssh/scp, you can install ftp from the feed.

minimal apps, nothing comes installed except configuration utilities

What you don't want you can remove - writable root.

A quick note: When I say that GPE can have its fs on a card (I assume you mean you want to free up more of root - you'd probably be better just installing apps to the card in fact), I mean that it can be done, but I'm not sure that anyone has done it.

I think you're probably better off leaving it as it is, and installing apps to the card.

You should also note that there are not that many apps available for GPE at the mo (as all pdaXrom stuff won't work on your 5500 - though stuff from ipkgfind.handhelds.org should work).

Anyway give GPE a go and see what you think,

well lardman, there are only a few apps i really need to have. one is a text editor and the other is PDa which we've been discussing via email.  Everything else really is just pretentious and i could probably live without much anything else.

I might just go get a CF card at staples around the corner and give this a go. How big do I need just to flash, maybe a 32 will do?   it seems like the files have been taken down off of the OZ website, when i click on show files, it says, no files were released. Where did you get your initrd file from if this has been taken down?

For OZ on the 5500 a 16Mb card is large enough - just, however you are better off with a 32Mb card (so you can flash the Sharp ROM ospacks too).

Nowadays the CF cards are so cheap that it's worth going for something larger imho, or get yourself an SD/MMC card to use for extra storage (as you may, in the future, want to get a WiFi CF card, etc.).

I kinda doubt that you will even be able to find a CF card less than 64M.  If you do, ask the manager if they will discount it as no one else will probably want it.  I have two 16M cards I found on a clearance sale for $5.00 each.  Now whenever I go to the store, I never see anything less than 64M anywhere (your mileage may vary).  The 64M cost just a few dollars less than the 128M cards.  Just my personal $0.02 worth:  buy the biggest you can afford easily.  You will find enough uses for it to justify it.  Also don't forget a card reader so you can use the card on your desk/laptop computer.
