Where to put Apps and problem with File Manager?
« on: December 20, 2003, 04:50:31 pm »
I received my second hand Zaurus complete with Sharp\'s ROM3.1 but no Applications loaded in. I managed to transfer them onto the Zaurus and decided to instal them to my 128 Meg Compact Flash rather than the Internal RAM for fear of not having enough space to run the programs. Is this the correct thing to do?

Also File Manager seems not to recognise the Compact Flash. I have installed the program itself onto both the CF and Internal memory but it doesn\'t make any difference. Do I have to do a soft reset or something?

thanks

Installing them to CF doesn\'t make any difference as your 32Mb of RAM disk is separate from the 32Mb of \'RAM\' memory (other than them surviving a hard reset that is).

Is this true? What does \'mount\' in the terminal tell you? /mnt/cf/ should be there somewhere (in fact you should be able to look at /mnt/cf/ in the filemanager). If not I\'d recommend a reboot to begin with to see whether you can fix it easily.

What was the program? It has probably installed okay, but may be command line only etc.

Just to be clear. So the memory for running programs (RAM Memory) will not be used by the memory for loading in programs then (RAM disk) ??

I just can\'t find any directories that are on the CF. I wasn\'t sure where to find them. from what you are saying the CF may be found in the \'mnt\' directory.

I ought to say that my SL5500 is a Christmas present from my wife , so I just managed to get file transfer working with a Serial cable (from my NT Laptop) and a quick try out of some apllications before I gave it to her to wrap up for me :-(

I was referring to the File Manager application

Welcome to the club,

Thanks. Looking forward to it. Have seen lots of stuff on the Net. Am thinking already of loading on the OZ Rom over the Chritsmas period but perhaps I should walk before I run !!

Yep that\'s correct, but rather than \'loading in\' I\'d say \'storing\'

.

You may need to restart Qtopia, settings ] shutdown applet.

About your CF card, Linux doesn\'t use separate drive letters, etc. like windows. The entire filesystem is unified and your CF card just looks like another directory (/mnt/cf).
