56k Modem Problem
« on: January 11, 2005, 09:19:57 pm »
Hi,

Love the zaurus, everything seems to work except this simple
56K modem CF card.

I bought a Pretec "Pocket PC" 56K modem CF card.
I had read that it should work on the Zaurus.

I popped it in, card was recognized, went to the network
icon, configured a dial-up connection using the wizard to
connect to my ISP.

Tried a connect, and got the message connection failed.

I was unsure of any diagnostics I could use, so since I have
two phone lines in my house, I decided to see if I could call
the other line.

So I configured another dial-up connection with my other
home number in it and tried to do a connect.

Again it failed, but my phone did not ring!!!!

I have tried various scenarios, but nothing works.

One thing I did notice, is when I went to system info
and clicked on devices. It showed all the information
about my card, but it also said [suspended]
I am not sure what this means.

Anybody out there have any advice/suggestions/tips???

Thanks

Although I do not  have CF modem card for testing.  With my past experience with modem communications, using Minicom will help check whether your modem card is in order.

Having  configured the modem card correctly,  typing  "AT" at terminal and the card should respond with "OK"

I hope the above will help.

3 more suggestions:

1.  Can you try the modem in another Zaurus, PocketPC, or laptop with PCMCIA adapter to make sure that the modem works?

2.  Look for someone whose signature shows that they have the Pretec modem, and ask them if they had to modify scripts to get it to work. (Targus PA560 worked out of the box, but some devices require a little hacking.)

3.  Have you installed any software that could be interfering? I have had some devices stop working when I installed an ipk that was not written for the 6000. After uninstalling that package, and finding the one that was written for the 6000, problem went away. So you might try uninstalling any suspicious package, reboot, and try the modem again. Keep doing that until you find the guilty app.

The problem is solved. It was all my fault.

When I go to the "network" icon to pull up networking.
You can choose lan, modem, wireless
when I choose modem, my two entries show up.
At this point, I thought the idea was to highlight the entry you want
to connect to, and then press the "connect" button.

However!!!! The problem is, that I set my wireless to "autoconnect"
thus, when I hit the "connect" button, it automatically tried to
connect via wireless.

Once I took off "autoconnect" it works! Now when I hit "connect"
it will ask me how (modem, wireless, etc.) and then bring up the
various modem entries I have.

Thanks for all your help. Even though none of your ideas pointed
to my own stupidity, they did widen my knowledge on other aspects
of the Zaurus and will help me in the future.
