Ok -- I know there are already a lot of posts on Zroadmap -- but in my search for intstallation instructions I have not really found any definitive descriptions of how to install it and get it running.

the first step of course will be to obtain the ipkg
that I have done and that I have installed

then i picked up usdir.rdm (in a tgz file)
next i picked up maps of my home state California (also in tgz format)
the two above files came from the roadmap home page.

At this point I am totally lost -- what directory do i place the files in and do i need to decompress them?

any body able to install zroadmap on 6k, the 1.0.8 ipk won't appear in the add/remove ipkg

ipkg install roadmap_1.0.8_arm.ipk

I got the following error

Code: [Select]
ipkg_install_file: ERROR unpacking control.tar.gz from roadmap_1.0.8_arm.ipk
ERROR: File not found: /usr/lib/ipkg/lists/Cacko
You probably want to run 'ipkg update'

zcat: roadmap_1.0.8_arm.ipk: not in gzip format

zcat: stdin: unexpected end of file

anybody find a version to install on the stock sharp rom?

maybe your file is corru8pt? or the media it is on?  I haven't had any issues w/ zroadmap at all.
I realize that it isn't much help, but check your media, dl again and retry.
i installed from the gui, even, and had nary a hiccup.

I am using v. 1.0-2.  I got it either from elsi or the zroadmap home.....

I tried dl'ing 1.0.8 yesterday and had the same problem as xjqian.  I did a little digging on the ipk and early in the header of the ipk it has a section header with "debian binary" or some equiv.  It also *appears* to have the beginning of a normal ipk some short number of bytes beyond the "debian" section.  The ipk of 1.0.8 can't be gunzipped due to the additional bytes.  I'm not sure what method to use to crack the ipk apart and repack it for installation.

Here's the actual header:
!<arch>
debian-binary/  1099813004  1000  1000  100644  4         `
2.0
data.tar.gz/    1099813004  1000  1000  100644  176831    `
<much binary data>
control.tar.gz/ 1099813004  1000  1000  100644  686       `
<more binary data>

I'm not familiar with this format.  It appears if correctly stripped the data between data.tar.gz and control.tar.gz would extract correctly but it's not working out for me.

Try 'ar -x <File>.ipk'

(That really is ar -x, I thought it was a typo of 'tar -x' the first time I saw it)

Thanks for the info....

I did the following:

ar -x roadmap_1.0.8_arm.ipk
tar xvzf ./debian_binary ./control.tar.gz ./data.tar.gz >roadmap_1.0.8_arm.ipk

Now the ipk shows up, but the graphical ipkg says "something went wrong".  From the command line (as root) the command:

ipkg install roadmap_1.0.8_arm.ipk -d /usr/mnt.rom/card

returns several errors:
tar: Bad tar header, skipping...

This occurs several times.  Looks like I have to try and repack the control and data.tar files.

i used /mnt/card/QtPalmtop/share/roadmap  it works
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=62214\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]
I installed the 1.0.2 version. I untared both old-usdir.rdm and my state map into the /mnt/card/QtPalmtop/share/roadmap

At the very first launch of zroadmap. It says "an error occured". The program started by no map displayed at all, blank page. At any successive launch, no error message anymore, but still the blank page. I tried the option "delete map" from the menu, no map was populated there. Checked "preference", map directory is correctly indicated. Seems it has trouble finding maps. Any ideas?

Btw, any version beyond 1.0.2 won't work with sharp rom. Is the developer steering away from sharp rom forever? Are those new releases for OZ (or other roms) only?

The problem is that there were (?) two developers: I created RoadMap (for the iPAQ, using GTK) and Laroslav ported it to the Zaurus (QT/QPE). It seems Laroslav did not maintain zroadmap (the QPE version) after a while. The zroadmap sources are actually the same as the roadmap source, since I kept merging. I believe the only part that may not work out of the box will be the make files.

But I have no Zaurus myself, and I have no development environment either. The ARM binaries on the RoadMap web site are for the iPAQ/Familiar distribution only and is the GTK version. I did build a PdaXrom version for one user: despite being a GTK version too, there are library incompatibilities with Familiar..

Basically, if anyone is interested in building the latest RoadMap for Zaurus (1.0.9 so far), please do. I will certainly provide my support, help and I will merge the proposed changes.

The (almost) latest sources can be obtained from RoadMap web site download page, the very latest from the CVS repository on SourceForge (project: roadmap).

Please note that the format of usdir.rdm has changed in 1.0.8 (the county maps are the same).

OpenEmbedded contains (z)roadmap 1.0.8. It's there - just needs people interested in the SharpROM doing the necessary bits to build it for their distributions...

I'm seeing the same thing.  Does one need to use a GPS device for this software to be useful? Is there something better for just maps?

I'm getting the same sort of "error occurred" messages when opening ZRM. The problem might be in the usdir.rdm file (corrupt, maybe?) -- when I untar it on my laptop, I get a "format error" message.

This seems to me like a prime app for yet another collaborative FAQ/pinned thread, like Kismet and GAIM for the SL-6000.
