Cacko And Zstyle - Stability?
« on: January 20, 2005, 01:56:35 am »
What I am looking for is a good way to use Cacko 1.22  with the English locale, and still be able to use the Japanese input methods and software (the dictionary and translator being prime examples).

Easy enough save for the fact that, as far as I can tell, Qtopia itself picks the best font for the locale, favoring the Helvetica fonts for English.

The first thing I tried was to delete the Helvetica fonts - Not great because these are some of the best fonts for display, limiting the useful fonts for things like hancom word and qtreader. The font that gets picked seems to be one of the lcfonts from the Japanese support package, but they appear overly thin and hard to read.

The next thing I though of was to "convert" the Japanese support, similar to how the original Sharp rom gets modified. I never tried it, though.

What ended up working was zstyle, once I fixed it to work in Cacko. I'm using 18pt lcfont for Qtopia, which seems to look best, and it leaves the Helvetica fonts available to other software.

What I'm worried about is stability - Has anyone else used zstyle much on a c series zaurus? Some of the random bits I pulled up while looking up the software did mention some stability concerns runnig it on the 5xxx machines.

I'm currently running my C760 on Cacko1.22 with full Japanese support and all English menus etc.

Basically you have 2 options

1) Change your locale to zh_TW - I personally had font size problem with this, but others have reported no problems.

2) Use my script (http://www.wbcd.org/computing/zaurus/part_12.html) to convert menus etc to English. Full details available here about what the script does if you want to try it manually

I forgot about the zh_TW - I tried that too - The font size problem was pretty bad. It also changed a couple of icon names into Chinese (Text editor being one)

I used your script to convert my 860's Sharp rom to English. I had thought to try that on Cacko, so I'm glad it is a viable option. I'll give that a go if zstyle doesn't work out.

It's kind of annoying - I spent days looking all over the net for info on this and didn't find much but people asking how to do it.  We should make a Cacko Japanese FAQ...

If someone wants to write a Japanese HOWTO I'm sure Anton will put it up on the Cacko.biz site.   Additional packages you would like on the feed for this  are fine. Just let me know what they are as I don't use any of the Japanese stuff.  I'm all for making things easier and better.

I'd be up for that. I'll try and draft something up over the weekend while it is all still fresh in my head...

I'm about 1/3 done the first draft, and I have a question. Is there a particular reason that the data files for the translator aren't available on the feed? (translator-ej-data_1.0.0_arm.ipk and translator-je-data_1.0.0_arm.ipk)
They are only 7.5mb and 6mb - both together about the same size as the dictionary IPK.  Or is it to do with the fact that the translator is 860 only?

I can upload them if adding them to the feed is an option.

Maybe the dicrionary is those two packages combined?  In any case, it's a good idea to have them split, so that people can download them more easily. Feel free to uppload those two packages, and we'll take a look at them.

The main reason is that I don't have the ipks for the translator data (only the files from a C860 NAND) and I thought the raw files were too big to upload.

Also the translator ipks came on the C860 CD. So I though anyone who needed them would have them.

The dictionary IPK contains the files for the wordtank-like Kanji Dictionary - sljisho, which comes with all SL-Cxx Zaurii. The two files I mentioned are for the 860-only English-Japanese Translator program.

That means that only people with an original 860, or people who flash the 860 NAND, extract the files, then flash Cacko can use the translator package. With the tranlator being such a useful program for beginning Japanese students it would certainly be nice for it to be a little more easily available. (Even for 860 owners. I accidently left the CD for my 860 in Japan, so when I was experimenting early on I had to do a NAND restore to get the translator back)

That being said, I'll upload the packages. Should I do it here (do attachments work now?) or on the uploads link at bryandeluca.com?

I'll up them on the Cacko feed link anyway. LMK if you want them here as well.

I've just uploaded my repacked version of zstyle to the feed. It seems to install cleanly on my Z, so hopefully it works.

The Japanese HOWTO is coming along. I saw somewhere someone mentioning a built in screenshot facility in Cacko. (Something about fn+shift+C) Where do the pics get stored or how do you access them?

Thanks!

Hints for using Zstyle:

1) Reboot after installation.
2) Make sure you press+hold, remove magnified checkmark
3) To change Qtopia's font, change the font from the "Launcher" tab
4) Before making changes to the launcher font, make sure you're in the large Icon view in Qtopia (fn + 2)
5) If you make changes to the launcher, don't let Zstyle reboot. Terminate Qtopia manually.

And most importantly, consider this package experimental, so I recommend backing up before using it. It was originally compiled for the 5xxx series, and it modifies Qtopia at boot time. It seems to work for me, but I don't use it for anything but changing my Font. It isn't my fault if it bricks your Z, makes you lose data, or kidnaps your firstborn. (Or anything else for that matter)

I've finished the first draft of the Japanese HOWTO.  It covers installation of Japanese support, installing the Dictionary and Traslator data files to an external memory card, and adding Japanese input support to the English Locale.
