Cacko 1.22 Runs Slower And Slower?!
« on: January 25, 2005, 10:57:07 am »
I hope this isn't a FAQ somewhere --

I have cacko 1.22 on a c700 ... but I find that the system runs slower
and slower and I asically have to pull the battery.  It gets to the point
where if I click on the menu button in the lower right -- it can take 20,
25 or even more seconds... before I hear the beep for the click.

I test by loading kino in an attempt to play an mp3 (which it won't) ...
but then even if I kill kino, the system is so slow, I have to reboot.

Does anyone else have 1.22 on a c700 and have this problem?

Scott

I also noticed that 1.22 was slower (but prettier) than 1.21b, but not *that* kind of slow.

I'll do more thorough testing and post here the results.

No, it's not that it's slower like 2x slower...

it's that it progressively GETS slower... and slower...

I'll see if it's just kino, or anything... but I vaguely remember it
was anything... ie: just boot, sit there... click a few places...
and then click more -- but now the clicks are further
and further behind.

I've noticed the same thing.  It acts like it's not freeing RAM properly or something.  After running a few fairly RAM intensive apps one at a time it just slows down to a crawl regardless of what I do.

Is it possible that it's hanging on to RAM in the buffer more than it should?

Have you verified that the processes are actually exiting and not hanging around for some reason?  Or used top to check where your memory is going?

It's usually quite hosed, but I'll see if I can get the terminal to come up the next time this happens.

The RAM usage applet does go back down after I exit an app, but that excludes the buffer.

kbranch are you also running a C700?

This is very interesting as I use my Z all day long playing games, running KDE PIMS, etc.  I have never had this problem.  I noticed some apps like quake will stay running in the background after exiting, but that is not what is going on here.  Strange...

Yeah, I'm running a C700.  Sorry I didn't mention that earlier.

This started with 1.22.

I had problems with kopi auto-saving a large backup from time to time, which ate up all my memory and slowed my Sl-C860 to a halt.  Archiving years of journal entries into another file has helped a lot!

We need at least a list of apps installed and running (especialy fastloaded) on your Zaurus for all users who expirience this problem.

I just discovered what may be a related slowwwwww feature on my C-860. It never happened until I installed visiscript (both 0.3.1 and 0.3.2) from the author's website. Now visiscript takes about 2 min to start up. It doesn't seem to happen with any other applications. I have a swap file enabled so the memory applet shows a healthy amount of green the whole time. I can also start up other applications while visiscript is taking its time getting around to loading.

If I look at the processes in the information application, I can see the time tick up to 130 before visiscript actually comes up.

Visiscript works fine on my 6000 with sharp rom.

On my C750 there is a noticable performance decrease from 1.21 to 1.22.
I am not sure about memory leaks - the performance seems consistent no matter how long since my last reboot, and i always have spare RAM available. In general apps start slower, but more noticable is the extreme chopynes when scrolling a list. (for example scrolling throught the addressboook)

Was there a major update to the kernel here, or could the new images being used be a bit more cumbersome for the Z?

Here one thing you can check - if you have KO/PI installed and fastloaded, make sure that you have fastload disabled for Sharp's datebook application. If it's running it will take a lot of processor time after Ko/PI finishes  synching with DTM database
