Should I Get Another Zaurus?
« on: January 28, 2005, 11:22:37 am »
The 760's sound module seems hosed and it is out warranty.  I'm not sure if it will be worth it to get it repaired (would sharpusa do out of warranty repair?).  It's only a year and few months old (got it when tkc was offering them).

I'm thinking my other options would be to by another 860/760, but would I run into this problem again a year down the road?  A 3000 is too expensive to take the chance again and the 6000 is too big to carry with me everywhere.  PIMs are primary.  Kde pim pi is great.

The other option would be to buy a cheaper pocket pc or palm and keep the Zs at home.  Are they more reliable hardware wise?  I prefer the swiss army knife of linux, but the japanese only support is kind of inconvenient.

Am I overreacting?
I'm now an iphone user and use my zaurii as serial terminals, perl and shell scripting and when I need 640x480 screens

Don't give up on your Z so quickly, bluedevils.

Have you checked on what would really be involved with repairing it with the company you bought it from?

I'd do that first and then make a decision. Maybe it's not a big deal to fix...who knows...

If it is, get another Z...if budget's an issue I'm sure you can find a good deal on a used one from someone here or elsewhere.

FWIW, I've had my C3000 for a couple of months now and love it!

Thanks ArchiMark,

I absolutely love my 760 (and the 6000 for that matter).  I have not recieved a response from TheKompany yet, but I am hopeful.

It doesn't make sense for me to spend +$750 for the 3000 as it is only a slight upgrade and possibly a more significant Z will be out in a year.

I was thinking of getting a cheaper HP (~$400 with wifi, bluetooth and really small) to hold me over until then.  The 760 would become the webserver and the 6000 would take on a more ultra portable instant on laptop roll.  A used 760/860 may be an option, but everybody wants to sell with addons and above $500.  We will see.

Sharp charges $50 to breathe on the unit...then whatever else for parts and labor.

If you're going to buy a "in the meantime" PDA for PIM use, I think the Palm devices have it waaaay over PocketPC.

I'm in a "in the meantime" situation right now between a disabled 5500 (probably my fault) and a 6000 (waiting for the cash to appear).  Using the PocketPC as a PIM is driving me crazy...I can't stand it.  But I also make my recommendation from reading several other forum posts and articles.

you know something?

I don't see myself using another handheld device.  For me, i am a linux lover and ill support it till the last kernel in the world is still running  on the last pda.  I dont like the microsoft products! palm would be my next step but since we have something special going on here i would say stick with this platform.

The community here is strong.  Since you are willing to fork money over for a cheap palm or a windows, why not fork it over for another 760 and use the one you have as a spare?

i am currently on the 5500 and need 50 dollars more for the c3000 model.  Im not sure if i should wait till pdaxrom comes out for it or what but i have money saved up and i also purchased pens, screenprotectors and a new battery for my 3 year old zaurus.

underwater,

what is it you don't like about the m$ PIMs?  I have no experience with them.

Cresho,

don't get me wrong.  I've had 3 Zs and I will get a 4th, but I'm unsure about my options at this time.  I would get another 760/860, but I don't want to be in this same situation next winter after shelling out another +$500.

I will seriously take both advisement to choose palm over pocket PC.

The default PIM apps at least look horrible on the PPC devices.  Also, I've found that syncing to exchange was more difficult if you can imagine that.  Palm devices also tend to crash less.

Many of the arguments are subjective, but it seems like a majority of ppl who have used both prefer the Palm.

OK maybe this sounds like a solution.  AFAIK the 750 should be the same as the 760, but with less user space (/home) and a smaller battery.  Though the user space is nice I could sacrifice it, but I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong) I can take my battery and cover from the 760 and use it on the 750.  Conics advertises a used one for a price comparable to the other PDAs I was looking at.

you could carry your 6000. I do. then make your soundless 760 a server, and save a few hundred bucks for expansion or other toys.

I considered that and I haven't totally ruled that option out, adf.

1) I already have the expansion sleeve

2) Even without the expansion sleeve, it is too big for my tastes.  Even the clamshells are at my upper limit.  Remember this is for a PDA to take with me *everywhere*.

That is also part of the appeal of taking a break from the zaurus line, to have a small pda that is less obtrusive (an updated a300 would have been nice).  The appeal to find clamshell Z is the keyboard and the versatility of linux.

One of my coworkers is convinced that some chinatown shop will be able to fix.  I seriously doubt it.

I have the luxury (?) of living in a cold climate, and so usually have a vest of some kind on.. the 6k fits nicely in the vest pockets.  I admit there isn't much by way of non-vest-based (hehe) unobtrusive carry options. A  very small camera bag does ok, though it definitely raises the "obtrusivity" of the thing.
It just seems to me that buying another 7x0 when you have 2 zaurii is tossing $$$. that could be spent on the next one after the 3k --and you know you'll want one of those

or you could just carry the Zaurus (6000) by a lanyard around your neck all the time - like the Japanese who are fond of carrying their PDA around like that.
(not to mention the neck pain you will get from wearing the weight all the time).

But I actually carry my Zaurus 6000L all the time, but thats because mostly I have a small bag with me most of the time. At times it even gets in into the deeper trouser pocket (though I dislike the big bulge there), but not so with casual wear (jeans) and all that. In fact my C750 stays at home nowadays - the 6000 with the Wifi and the transflective screen seems a better bet outdoors.

Yep.  That is my dilema.  I'm going to take my 6000 into work tomorrow and see how I feel.  I did it before, but I'll try it again.
