Questions by a new C860 owner

Hi all,
I have just received a new 860 and would like to know what to do next without making it a very expensive brick.

I appreciate any answers to the above questions. I had these questions for a while, I am not sure why I waited until now to ask them. I guess I was hoping they would be answered before I got my new Z. BTW - I would really like to have PIMS on my new Z that would be able to sync with Windozes (company standard  :x ) Thank you all for you help!

I also have an 860

First - Charge the unit for 24 hours prior to first turning it on.  It\'s probably more than you need, but thats what they suggest so you might as well get that started.

Oh, and the charger that comes with it is fine. (I live in Canada and it even measures the right voltage with a voltmeter)

OK, now for the details.

The initial nand backup

make sure you have a cf card in with 140 megs free
unplug the power supply
remove the black back (battery cover) of the unit
remove the battery
wait 5 secs
press D and M keys
plug in the charger
switch the battery cover switch back to locked (no battery, no cover)

The screen will now display the service menu

press the up cursor key twice to get to page 3 of 3 of the service menu
press enter to start the backup (note that pressing the right cursor key would take you to a restore option down the list which is used in the same way)
wait a few minutes until it says OK
press cancel
press power off button

you now have a 135 meg or so file on the cf card that you can copy whereever you want.

Loading TKC

download the updater.sh-860 script from http://community.zaurus.com/project/showfi...&release_id=291
download the file initrd.bin-tkrom-2.5.1-slc7x0 as well
rename the files to updater.sh and initrd.bin and put onto your cf or sd card
put cf or sd into zaurus
take battery out of z
wait 5 seconds
put battery back in
lock battery cover switch
press OK and turn on power at the same time.
plug in power supply

you will see a menu of 4 buttons - press the 4th one
you will see a menu of 3 buttons - press the one for the sd or cf card used
you will see 2 buttons - press left one (has a Y on it I think)
wait until flashed.  you will need to press a bunch of little cross hairs, set the time and then it will tell you its dealing with the owner info or something - just hit next, next

you are now running tkc.  I ended up doing this about 1000 times over the first two weeks what with trying tkc, oz, cacko, x11 and setting up my internet access.  In fact you may want to use the cacko installer to allow you to reduce the memory used by the os. 

Note that this method uses the sharp kernel as default

As for the PIM.  You\'ll want to be installing the pim and other stuff from proto\'s feed.  This can be done online once you are connected.

1) Does the NAND procedure only work with a CF card?
2) Can you use a SD card?
3) What format (FAT16, EXt2) does the card need to be?
4) Do I have to do a NAND backup myself or can I use a virgin NAND backup from someone who has already done one if I needed to do a restore?
5) Where can I find a comparison of the various kernal that can be used with TKC 2.5.1?
6) Last, but importantly, can I easily FTP or SSH into the Z with the stock Japanese ROM to put the TKC ROM and updater onto an SD card since I do not have a SD card reader/writer? If yes, is it all in Japanese?

Yup

You can use someone else\'s.  I think there are some at conics.net, although I don\'t have the URL.  I have various nand backups that I could make available for download, but you\'d need to get it onto a cf card.  Note that there were several times that I had to go back to the nand backup during my learning phase.

I\'m not really sure how to do it, but I know other people on the forums have talked about doing it.  Once you are on the zaurus, its all standard linux (english that is).[/quote]

As the c760 and c860 are the same hardware then this should apply to it too.

I can do a nand backup restore on my fat16 formatted sd card.

The easiest way of copying files to the c860 is to use the card reader function and plug the usb cable in.

It automatically connects, and you do not need any software if you are running xp.

Are you running the japanese version at the moment?

These instruction will set up your c860 as an sd card reader/writer on the cacko rom.

Click on the settings tab at the top.

Select the pc-link icon

Select the first radio button, (storage)

Drop the box next to this button down, and select sd card.

Plug the usb cable in and xp will add your zaurus as a sd card reader and create a new drive for you.

Copy your files as it it was a floppy disk.

Thank you again for the answers. I think I am pretty much comfortable now with proceeding (will need to get a CF card first however). The only part to all this that I am not comfortable with is not using a step down transformer (the fear of damaging the adapter or more importantly, the unit). Why I say this is in my first post I pointed to this URL of a company selling a 110 V -] 100 V step down transformer (http://www.walkabouttravelgear.com/japant.htm). I am wondering why a company would make such a product if it were not necessary. Additionally, there is another company (forgot the name) theat sells the C860 and automatically adds this step down transformer to the shopping cart. Why do they need to incur this additionaly expense if it were not necessary? Anyway, I guess if everyone else if plugging the EA-72 into a wall outlet that is 110 V and have had no problems for over a month or two then there should be no problem. Thank you again.

take a look at zbones post.  Maybe you don\'t need a cf card.  I guess I haven\'t looked for the sd option as I already have a cf card.

Also - as zbones mentions - using the usb cable is an option, I just don\'t know how easy it is to set up with the 860 still in native japanese.

Thanks zbones....I\'ll give it a try tomorrow when my Z is fully charged.  BTW - I am using the Japanese version.
