C700 Won't Start - Leds Blinking
« on: February 02, 2005, 07:03:53 am »
I was operating my c700 with a Netgear wireless card. Zaurus hung, wouldn't switch off, so I did a soft reset with the battery switch. Rebooted, but then hung on second screen. Soft reset again, then mail (green) and battery (orange) LED's started blinking. Remove power, only the mail light blinks.

I tried removing the battery and reseting it. Worked once - but only got to the first reboot screen (black) before it hung again. Now I can't get it to start at all - lights start blinking as soon as the battery is back in and that's all that happens.

Any ideas?

Have you tried getting to the D+M or D+P service menus (power off, remove battery, hold down D+M or D+P and replace battery for further instructions search the forum)?

If you can you  can try a nand restore but I have seen this problem on my C860 and it is because the boot loader in the p2rom is not finding the nand due to errors in the flash memory (I have a serial cable to follow the debugging messages).  This is bad!  There maybe a way to fix your c700 if this is the case but for my c860 it has proved terminal.
SL-C860 running Cacko 1.23
SL-5500UK with 3.13 Sharp ROM + Cacko Kernel
Origo WLAN and BlueMonkey BT CFs
1GB Crucial SD
1GB Crucial CF

This sounds like the NAND part of the bootloader is hosed.

If you do bitwalking tests on the NAND or NAND erase you get this behaviour.

I would suggest doing flash tests to get a good feel if there's an actual problem then doing a NAND flash restore from a virgin image.

Incidentally the Power on OK menu is stored in the NAND bootloader so even if you want PDAX or OZ you will probably need to restore a Sharp image first.

Thanks for your replies guys. Still no luck - apart from the flashing LED's, the unit is totally unresponsive, so I can't even get to the service menus. I was running the default Sharp ROM (I have tried the pdaXrom on it before).

I left the battery out all day but it made no difference either.

Anything else I can try? I'm going to Japan for a couple of days later this year - anything that can done there (apart from drooling over a later model)?

At least some amusement might be gained over the circumstances of my C700's "death". I was in the middle of viewing a web page on tetanus vaccines when the Zaurus seized up.  Perhaps the machine is suffering from "lockjaw" as tetanus is also known!

Back to my SL-5500 for now.

Very specifically try the service menus as follows.

i. Remove battery and power. - wait 10 seconds.

ii. Hold down D+M from this point.

iii. Insert Battery and flick cover catch (don't bother with putting the cover on).

iv. Wait a few seconds and you should have the Service Menus.

v. Release D+M and add power.

Still no luck, I'm afraid. Interestingly the green (mail) light flashes as soon as the battery is returned into the Zaurus, even though the battery cover catch is open.

Grasping at straws here, but could it perhaps be a problem with the battery or electrical system? I think not, because of the earlier partial boot problems and I've tried without the battery and get the same result (note that I use the SL5500 charger because it can cope with 230V and I'm in Australia, unlike the one that came with the 700 - 110V only).

Okay, after trying again and again I finally got the service menu up. I went to NAND Restore from CF. The systc700.dbk file on the CF has worked previously (eg restoring from pdaXrom). However, I get the following message now:

Restore...failed
format error
