Japanese Support/input Method
« on: February 06, 2005, 12:06:01 pm »
I installed the following packages:

http://zaurus.spy.org/feeds/jabbath/rc5/ja....1_armv5tel.ipk
http://zaurus.spy.org/feeds/jabbath/rc5/im....2_armv5tel.ipk

All I can get to work is Abiword displaying a japanese UTF-8 file I made on my windows machine.

I started im-ja-xim-server, but nothing seems to happen.  I edited its preferences to assign a key to switch input mode to hira/kata/english letters but I can only type english letters.  Actually, I would rather use something a little lighter than Abiword--something like scite, but I can't even switch to japanese fonts with that editor.

If you are able to read Japanese characters,
[a href=\"http://pdaxrom.sourceforge.jp/wiki/]http://pdaxrom.sourceforge.jp/wiki/[/url]
has detailed information about Japanization of pdaXrom.

We also have Japanized-from-installation image of RC8.
see http://sourceforge.jp/projects/pdaxrom/files/

If you need further assistance, you can PM me, and I'll tell you my ICQ or MSN, whichever is convenient.

I am NOT a fluent Japanese speaker, but an English-speaking student of Japanese.   I can read hiragana and katakana, but I recognise about 10 kanji.  So I am not looking to Japanify the whole user interface.  What I am trying to do is just set up one text editor in which I can type and read Japanese UTF-8 documents.  hiragana/katakana/kanji input works for me under KDE on my (US English localized) linux box but using different software than is currently available  for pdax rom.

I was just wondering if anyone who uses the software in the feed below could tell me how.  Someone must be using im-ja to type Japanese.....

hi zaphod!
The im-ja packages are out of date.. you just have to install the packages uim, anthy and japanese-fonts from pdaxrom.sourceforge.jp/feed or alternatively zaurus.spy.org/feeds/jabbath/rc5

..

that's all  now in every of your gtk2 apps you should be able to input japanese by selecting japanese input method with the rightmousebuttonmenu..

grusz and good luck

Thanks, I got it working although for some reason the postinst script in the uim package failed to run, saying it can't find gtk-uim-update.  Don't know why as gtk-uim-update was installed to /usr/local/bin, which is on my path, and running it by hand worked.

I have to start uim-toolbar-gtk-tray manually in order to change input methods in leafpad.  I like leafpad just fine, it isn't too big.
