25 MB partition / 96 MB free on TKC ROM - How?
« on: January 13, 2004, 07:53:18 am »
Has anyone been able to do the 25MB partition to get the free 96MB using the TKC ROM for the 860? What are the steps and files needed? Thank you.

Hi 2devnull

Yes it is possible

Probably the easiest way is to download the cacko x11 rom tarball and extract to your cf / sd card and start the flash process. The first thing you will notice is that a menu pops up choose \"flash repartition\" and enter 25 in the box that pops up. It will cary out the repartion and reboot. You now need to run it again and flash the users partion or do it manualy via menu option 3. Obviously you will then need to reinstall tkc rom.

I can vouche for the Cacko X11 and Qtopia ROMS both successfully have partitioned, formatted, and installed on the internal flash of my c860.  If you follow the flashing instructions you should then be able to have the proper partitions setup.  Since I have never tried the TKC ROM I don\'t know what the installer is like, but once your flash is partioned you should be able to install the TKC ROM onto the 25MB root partition.

As far as Cacko X11 breaking things.  It is installing a new distro onto your Z so you will end up with the default Cacko X11 software as opposed to the Sharp or whatever ROM you are currently running.  On every ROM at a minimum PPP over USB has always worked.  So, in a worst case you should be able to connect via USB to get to your Z.

Hope this was helpful.

Good Luck!

2devnull,
Yes, I am. I had troubles while installing tkROM on 25/96 partition after Cacko repartitioning made me using Richard\'s suggestion. I used updater.sh-slc860  and  initrd[1].bin-tkrom-2.5.1-slc7x0

Sorry I hadn\'t notticed this before.

Once you have updated the partion with the cacko updater you must:

1) Do not install the cacko kernel/rom and then update with tkc (it wont work)

2) You must clear your user space iether re-using the cacko updater or via option 3 on the sharp menu.

3) You must use a sharp kernel if you have a previous cacko installation you need to load the std kernel/ or one from the ZUG downloads (with tasty add ons) first.

4) ONCE you have done all this you can now load the tkc rom.

2devnul,
unfortunately I experienced the same white screen , but I also did not clear the user partition.

Richard,
for installation I used two files:
updater.sh-slc860
initrd[1].bin-tkrom-2.5.1-slc7x0

z Image is in the third file zimage (which is not for c860)
which kernel to load for c860?

ok, mine work now. I did the Option 3 in the Sharp menu and it worked. The three files are used were the updater.sh from cacko, the initrd[1].bin-tkrom-2.5.1-slc7x0 from proto and the tools.tar from cacko. I put all those files on the root of my SD card and first did the flash partition to 27 MB and then flashed the ROM.

Now, I have the TKC ROM running on the partitioned C860. When I look at the System Info-]Version tab, under Linux Kernel it states \"Version 2.4.18-rmk7-pxa3-emb. Compiled by: (sash@sash). therefore, I am assuming I am using sash\'s kernel. however, I would like to try one of the faster kernels but I do not understand the differences between all of them and which ones are tested to run on the C860 (e.g. Sukoshi, Javaboy, Sash, etc.)

2devnull, I tried to repeat what you have written here on my C860 but I failed. Either I am doing something wrong or you did not write something in you last message. Could, you, please write step by step what you did to get tkROM,

The steps I took was exactly as stated here:
http://www.cacko.biz/index.php?showid=2&menuid=1

The only difference I made to use the initrd[1].bin-tkrom-2.5.1-slc7x0 instead of the cacko one.

AND, big AND is to do the Sharp Menu step #3 as Richard has pointed out (you can do this at the very last)

It should work after this!

T2devnul, THANK YOU. I did it. The first mistake was I was doing Sharp Menu step# before installing not after. Another bad move was I used cacko X11, not cacko qtopia so I stopped on touch screen positioning. Now it is great, I have tkROM installed.

No problem! Thanks should go to Richard or I would have also still been stuck since I cannot read Japanese and not daring enough to just execute menu options without knowing what it does. Another thanks to Sash, Proto, b2bpro and the others who helped everyone out who provided the ROM and who provided guidance. Now I wish someone can provide a list with all the kernels that works on the 860 and what the difference between them are. I have a Socket wifi card and would love to get the wireless sniffing extentions working.
