Won't Resume From Suspend
« on: February 18, 2005, 09:35:03 am »
Hi everyone,

I'd appreciate your help on this one...

My C3000 keeps dying after it suspends.  That is, after it suspends and I try to wake it up with the 'on' button nothing happens.  When I plug in the Sharp power supply I don't get a changing light - nothing.  The only thing to do is to remove the battery and reboot.  This happens if I use the on/off button to suspend or if it goes to sleep on its own.

I've had this for a few weeks (maybe since I bought it) and have been trying to find the cause, but I've come up completely blank.  Today I reset the machine back to factory original via the OK menu and tried again.  I only installed the terminal ipkg and moved a couple of lib files to get english in the most commonly used applications (I didn't even do a full conversion to English - just a single step in Stubear's script) The b*****d machine is still doing the same trick.  It's not entirely predictable and there seems to be no way to find the cause.

I wouldn't mind quite so much, but I love this machine and this crashing problem _always_ seems to happen at the worse time, just as I take the machine into an important meeting where I need my diary, notes and Japanese<>English dictionary.

Please, before I send the machine back (luckily I'm in Japan) can someone tell me if the is really acceptable behaviour from a C3000?  I think it's a hardware problem.  I tried 3 batteries and they make no difference.

Many thanks in advance,

Jonathan
(a very sad C3000 owner)

Jonathan,

there are two issues actually known with the SL-C3000.

First issue:
Electrostatic problem
Applicable for:
Some units from the first production run (serial number
starts with "4" and ends with "0").
Error description:
Unit must be up and running and connected to the AC
adaptor. If the user is electrostatic charged and touches
the unit, the Zaurus will turn off and not reponding to the
power button.
After pulling and re-inserting the battery, the unit boots
normal.
Action:
Return to Japan, SHARP exchanges / modifies unit.

We informed all our customers with devices from the first
lot about this possible failure. Only 10 units were returned
to us, so this problem is not too big.

Second issue:
No restart after suspend
Applicable for:
Unknown, only 2 customers reported this until now.
Error description:
Unit is connected via USB to a PC. After a while, the unit
turns off and won't turn on.
Action:
It looks NOT like a hardware failure in the Zaurus. As we
have investigated so far, the Zaurus has not gone into
suspend. Fact is, that the Zaurus stayed on and discharged
his battery. Without a minimum load, no Zaurus would boot.
After about 15 minutes connected to the AC adaptor the
battery has enough power and the Zaurus started.

These are the only 2 issues we have with the C3000 model
so far. And only #1 is a real hardware problem.

Jonathan, please check if it's also just a drained battery. Looks
like there's a problem with units NOT suspending. We also
monitor the two customers with the similar problem, but it
seems that we're right with our explanation.

If other users have same problems, please respond to this
thread.

If you are overclocking the 3000 then search the forums a little. There are some notes on this causing lockups on resume too.
OpenBSD 4.2 -current on full 4Gb of SL-C3000
Microdrive replaced with 4Gb SanDisk Extreme III card

Thank  you Marc for a quick response!

First issue:

My unit seems ouside this serial number range (starts with 4, ends with 5Y).  I work with static-sensitive electronic components on the desk next to my c3000 and they are all fine...  Anyway, this only seems to be a problem when on battery, not AC.  And I don't need to be near the unit for it to die in its sleep.  Post crash symptons seem similar though...

Second issue:

Nope, no connections to anything.  Unit sits on the desk or table or in my pocket, at home or at work or in the car.  Goes to sleep automatically or by pressing on/off button or by closing lid.  Later won't wake up.  After battery-out-reset there is plenty of life in the battery.

It's interesting that after the battery is pulled and the unit resets the clock seems to show the time when the unit died.  This can be anytime from 1 minute after going to sleep to >8 hours after.  This time is not related to suspend time or battery-out-reset time - could be in the middle of the day or in the middle of the night.

From your helpful response, and your extensive experience, it looks like this is not normal behaviour and the unit will have to go back.

It's been kind-of annoying to have a PDA that takes longer to wake up from sleep than my large laptop... so much for "instant-on"

Many thanks again,

Jonathan.

Thanks Iamasmith,

No more overclocking for the moment - my problem occured many times before I changed the kernel (which I changed *specifically* to see the startup messages so I could try to debug this problem  - see [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=10543]Boot C3000 Into Text Console, and how to see startup messages at boot[/url])   Been back with original kernel and default system for a week and this problem still happens once or twice a day.  Actually Tetsu's special kernel was just as stable (or unstable, with respect to my problem) as the stock Sharp kernel.

As an aside, it was interesting that the factory reset via the OK menu wouldn't work with Tetsu's special kernel installed.  I had to reflash the original Sharp kernel and only then could I do a factory reset.  Had me confused for a time.  Seems the factory reset procedure needs a friendly kernel to talk to.

Many thanks again,

Jonathan
