5600 Rom ?
« on: February 20, 2005, 01:58:36 am »
Just picked up a 5600 250 proc with a belkin wifi card and grabbed a usb card reader and a 1 gig sd card. What I would like to use my Z for is.

MP3's at the gym
Keep track of what I am doing at the gym
PIM to sync with Mac OS X one way is fine
Store and view baby pics/slideshow
maybe watch some short vids
WiFI browsing and email
Store view doc/pdf's
mindless games ie tetris clones and such

As a neophyte to linux what ROM/kernel would people suggest?

I have the TKC rom on now but that's all.

Thanks, Kevin

A couple of things here. Most of what you want can be done with the basic SHARP ROM and its associated Qt GUI. You could try Open Zaurus ROM (3.5.2) and its Opie GUI, but it is still a bit unstable and needs some understanding of linux file structure etc.

The Mac OS X sync is the issue in both of the above cases. The SL5600 was only supplied with PC sync S/W. However there is a site that has got "ZMacSync" running, but it is still in its infancy but will do simple PIM syncs. See URL: http://www.dsitri.de/wiki.php?page=ZMacSync This only works with the SHARP ROM.

Hope this helps.

You  might have a look at watapon as well. The default watapon kernel does not have the pxa250 cache bug workaround turned on though.  This can theoretically create errors, though it will
run much faster. I used it on my  5600 pxa250 happily before 8 went to a 6k.

I was looking at the sharp based ROM's seems watapon is still developing where as zynergy has remained static does anyone know if zmacsync works with watapon.

Any suggestions for an image viewer that has a slideshow, I would like to do a slideshow in landscape mode that would be slick!

Thanks for the replies,

Kevin

I've tried a lot of different ROMs for my 5600/255 Z. My opinion is that the Watapon 1.5.6 ROM is one of the best Sharp-based roms available for the Poodle. The development seems to be done by only one guy, and he hasn't had much time to work on it. I've been hoping to see an update for a couple of months now, but no luck so far.

I'm currently running OZ 3.5.2 and have been intriqued by it. It offers a lot of flexibility and there is some active development going on all the time.

Hentges OZ 3.5.4.2
PQI 1G SD
PQI 256M SD
Socket LP 10/100 Ethernet
Ambicom WL1100C Wifi

There is also this:

[a href=\"http://www.lucid-cake.net/osx_zaurus_usb/index_en.html]http://www.lucid-cake.net/osx_zaurus_usb/index_en.html[/url]

And the latest version of TrollTech's Qtopia Desktop syncs with OZ/Opie.  Their FAQ claims they would be releasing a ROM in the last Q of last year, but I didn't find it on their site.  There is more info here:

http://www.trolltech.com/developer/faqs/qt...html?cid=22#q15

I had set my Zaurus aside for a while because of other stuff I was dealing with, and am just getting back to it, so I have not used either of these tools yet.  Currently I have OZ/Opie, but I am trying others before I settle on one.  So far, I do not like the dependency issues I have had with OS/Opie.

I have a PC that I use for a game box (I know, the horror!), so I am not so concerned about the sync issues, as my PIM data is really in my smart phone.  I want the Zaurus as something more than an iPod/something less than a laptop.
