Charging Options

Hi,

I'm going to be importing a C860 through pricejapan.com to the UK. Clearly I'm going to need some way to charge it...

Does the C860 just use a 'normal' circular power plug for charging, so that I could use any, appropriate, DC power supply that I can buy? Or does it have some special connector?

I notice that some places sell a USB 'Sync & Charge' cable... so if I get one of those it will just charge from a USB port? Is there any disadvantage with that? (eg. does it take longer to charge this way?) I presume that the Zaurus comes with a USB sync cable, does that not charge it too?

Hmmm, no replies to this, I'll detail how I think it works from what I've read, someone please tell me if I've got this wrong!

So, I believe that I can use a regular power adaptor (of correct voltage/polarity) to charge the C860.

Alternatively I can get a USB sync/charger cable and charge it that way.

Is that correct?

I still don't understand if there is any disadvantage in just using a USB sync/charger cable? Just wondering why the Z doesn't come with that way of charging it as standard?

the zaurus does use a standard circularpower connector but you'll have to be very carefull about it's polarity and voltage as it's quite picky  ... I don't remember charge being longer with usb sync/charge cable than with power adaptator  btw

Just out of curiosity (since it appear from your signature that you own a C3000), does the C3000's battery charge when using a USB cable, too?

I've used two different USB cables, the one shipped with the C3000 and a retractable USB cable from Brando (HK), but I never saw the charging LED light up when connected, though the Zaurus charges fine when I use the AC adapter...

Not that it's a big issue for me since I'm going to travel light (i.e. the Zaurus will replace my laptop PC, which means I won't have a USB connector to recharge the Zaurus from when traveling) but it would be nice to know...

Hi everyone,

the SL-C3000 can not be charged via the USB connector.
This was only possible for the previous models, using the
SHARP I/O port.

Regarding the power supply, never ever (and better don't
really even think about it) use any other adaptor than the
original SHARP EA-70 (NOT the japanese EA-72).

The forums are full of people with "my Zaurus won't charge
any more, wahaaaaaa". Take a second, think it over and
come to the conclusion :
"I spend my hard earned $ for a very pretty device. I won't
blow it because i didn't wanted to spend more then $5 for
an ac adaptor".

Speaking about charging via SHARP I/O port... Do I have to use PWN IN/PWR GND lines to supply power for Zaurus or VCC/GND ones?

I think that it rather will be the first ones as second are rather used to provide power to devices connected to that port.

You'll need PWR IN/PWR GND.
Just look in the public documentation of the SHARP I/O Port:

Thx TRIsoft for confirmation.

Anyway I feel that +5V from USB connector is not good source of power for charging Zaurus. At work I have one b0rken usb port due to charging Sony Clie SJ30.
