Textmaker Sale
« on: February 22, 2005, 01:08:45 pm »
I've been fussing about spending $50 to buy TextMaker for Zaurus, expecially if I switch to pdaXrom in a year and can't use it anymore.

However, I wil pay $30, and stop having the excuse to reimage my Z whenever my trial runs out.

Thought others who are on the fence might be interested in this.
(There is also a service pack out that is supposed to improve on it and fix some issues.)

I had just read about TextMaker last week, and as I wrote here, I was disappointed to see it was so pricey. This $20/euro price drop is an amazing coincidence.

The long and short of it is that I'm sold. I just placed my order. This is a really great word processing app and now (albeit temporarily) at a reasonable price.

I just wish it was possible to run AbiWord on the Sharp ROM Zaurus (instead of having to use PDA XRom)...

Great word processor that is free!

Yes, Abiword runs under Xqt/Pocketworkstation, but it is almost too slow to be usable. Plus, there is the time one has to spend getting the setup working. Most people do not have the time or the patience for that.

Abiword runs a little faster under pdaXrom, but it is still not worth writing home about. The clincher for me was Textmaker opened some of my very long documents that Abiword simply would not open. Textmaker really is one application that is worth buying, and with the price drop this week you really should spring for it. It will help build up the user base so that SoftMaker can continue developing the program.

This is not a paid advertisement or infomercial; just the views of a Z owner just like you.

Bugger. Not long enough, apparently.  I don't see mention of it on their site anymore.

I'll at least go to the trouble of trying out their demo again - the version I looked at last was the last beta which still had performance and visual issues.

EDIT

Well, I acutally read the first post and followed the links to the discount ;P

They've made a couple of improvements since I last looked. Performance is better, especially if you turn off the anti-aliased fonts. It is still slow, but now it is acceptable instead of making me want to tear my hair out.

The improvements for the Hi-Res screen are a welcome change (Switch to "small icons" and restart the software) - It now looks more like a VGA app.

This is the second time I've spent money on a Z app - the first was waaaay back when I bought the Kompanie's movie player software for my 5000d. I think I'll get better use out of this purchase...

You can still buy textmaker for 29€ this week. I bought it, too.

I really think it's worth the money, I even added some images (about 1mb) and it was no problem at all.
