Bottom Line - Charging 860 In Us

I have read all the threads, but they just left me confused.

If I buy a Japanese 860, what charger should I get with it.

I want the most compatible with US power so I won't have problems down the road.

I've used both on my 760 and it didnt pop.
I feel more comfortable using the EA-72 on a US 110v line than the EA-70.  After all, that is the adapter it was built for.  It would seem that running the output amperage at 200% is more of cause for concern than running the input voltage at 110%.  I've felt confident enough to use both and a homemade battery box.

EA-70:
Input: 110v
Output: 5v 2a

EA-72:
Input: 100v
Output: 5v 1a

Over the years I've charged my Z's with:

Sharp EA-70
Sharp EA-72
8xNiMH AA Batteries
Compaq 3600-series power adapters
5v rail of my computer power supply.

If it puts out a regulated 5v you should be okay. The batteries were rated for 4.8v, and the regulated power supplies all put out 5.0-5.3 v.

I personally prefer the EA-70 just beacuse the "brick in the middle, not at the end" makes it really easy to plug into crowded power sockets, even with the tiny size of the EA-72. Plus the 2amp rating seems to make for better charge times.

For what it is worth, the vendors i talked to recommended the ea-70.

They do a service to the Zaurus community no doubt, but that is how they make money.

Well, I have a SL-5500 so I had the EA-70 already.  My problem is it charged all night and the battery light never went off like it does on my 5500.  Is that normal.  I know on another thread some people said they had the same thing, but it wasn't consistent.

I don't have a warranty because I bought a used 760 and I don't want to end up frying it, and I already have both chargers so I can use either one.

OK, serious now:

Time to charge a fully recharged battery with an EA-70:
EA-BL06 (SL-5x00, SL-C700/750) : 2-3 hrs
EA-BL08/EA-BL11 (SL-C760/860/3000): 4-5 hrs

After full charge the LED should turn off (if the device itself is off). After even
a second usage, it will charge for a few minutes until LED is off again.

If your charger LED is not turning off, there may be a problem with the ac
adaptor (we had not even one defective EA-70 while having a few
thousand in the field) or a problem with the battery / charger circuit.

You say you also have a SL-5500. Have you tried to use the EA-BL06 of
your 5500 in the SL-C model ? This could give you a hint if it's the battery
or the charger.

I hope I didnt offend you, (I really do apprecite what you do by making Zaurus's available locally for people who need a warantee).  I must have my tinfoil hat on too tight.  I dont mean to classify your services as people making money by spreading FUD, but with the U and D about frying a Zaurus w/ an incorrect charger, you can see where the F comes from, right?

Well, the charger works great in my SL-5500 (I charge 3 batteries with it on a regular basis).

I also want to say I support streamlinecpus even if I couldn't buy from them because I am too cheap/poor.

Especially since they are right down the road in Atlanta.  Steve, are you a Braves fan?

the 1-million-$-question is: If you pull the EA-BL06 out of your SL-5500
and stick it in the C-series model: Will it charge ?
If the answer is yes: The battery in the C-series is defective
No: Welcome to the growing club of fried charger electronics.
In this case you may cut the nose off of the big battery and charge
it in your SL-5500. This will save the external battery charger.

When you were charging your Clamshell, was it on or off? My 860 never turns it's power charging light off if it is running. (Or if it does, it takes a very long time). It charges very quickly when off.

This is the stock behavior that I had for the first 2 weeks in Japan with the EA-72 adapter, so it doesn't seem to be an artifact from using the adaptor in Canada. It is a hardware thing as it doesn't matter if I use the 1 amp EA-72, 2 amp EA-70, the Sharp Rom, or Cacko. It is also the same for the second 860 my friend uses.
