Charging C700 In Europe
« on: March 14, 2005, 03:46:55 pm »
Today i recieved my C700, it came with japanese charger , on the back of the charger it is stated :
AC 100V  - 50/60Hz  11VA ( what does this 11VA stands for?)
DC 5.0V     1.0A
and the schematic about polaritty ( outside is - inside +).
i got a usa/europe transformator - whic my cousin used with her hairdryer (shes from US) - it worked for about 15 min and then the charging led stopped and wouldnt charge.
i have probably

allso i found an old charger that i used on my cd discman ofrm sony, it has exactly the same output jack as zaurus and on the back are the details :
input AC 220-230V 50-60Hz 6W ( why is this different from japanese one)
output DC 4.5V ___--- 500mA  - this probably means it would take longer to charge the battery ( compared to 1.0 A on sharps original?)
the polaritiy is the same outside is - and inside +

can i use this one with with without  bricking my zaurus?
can anybody with electroinc knowledge compare the details on this two chargers and tell me can i charge it with thios one untill a new one arrives!

Thank you everybody in advance!!

I wouldn't try it without checking it with a meter. A lot of old plugpacks are unregulated and will output at higher than the rated voltage when not under load. (If it is unregulated your 4.5v plugpack might put out over 6v initially,) This initial spike of voltage is *not* good for a Z. You have to use a regulated plugpack that stays around or under 5v whether it is loaded or not.

i have checked the output and i think ive got it wrong it says 0,75.
could i switch the plugpack ( the one thet goes in the zaurus) from dicsman with the one from original zaurus one? would it make a difference?
i mean the regulated output is it with the charger ( the brick) or plugpack?

thx!

Your best bet would be to get a charger for an ipaq or somthing similar.  I charge my Z on a old ipaq charger at work and can use my 6v camera charger if needed.  The key seems to be most USB devices are 6v with the same polarity input though its wise to check first as the Z has no polarity protection ( for the sake af a diode on the input sharp!!!!!)

FYI VA means Volt Amps and is just the power of the charger output draw too much poser and the voltage drops and the charger gets hot / shuts off depending on the make and or quality.  Im also not sure about any charge protection on the batteries of the Zed's although Iv not heard of anyone poping their batteries yet......

you use a 6v adapter on your z? the guy above told me that it is not supposed to be above 5 V, hows that now?
i have found 2 chargers, for two discmans, output 4,5 V and one is 1.0A and the other 500mA, could i use them or not?

First stop playing with this chargers with your zaurus, if you do not know what are you doing, you may burn your zaurus.

1.- You need at least a 5 volts (5.4 v will be ok) in order to charge your zaurus battery.
2.- You need an AC -DC convertor at least of 800mA.
3.- You need to know if the DC output is really clean. Because if you see the output of a nokia charger it is a sine wave up to 10 volts, i have a LG littium cell phone charger , DC very clean (5.2 v - 800mA).
4.- Connect with the right polarity, for the c700 is correct (+ inside, - outside)
5.- I do not recomend  (it is my opinion) the usb charger for the c700 it consumes a little more than 500mA and your usb can burn. I made a usb charger and connected the c700 to a external hub with a external supply and the Regulator of the usb hub gets a little hot.

Agreed.  Some chargers are definatly not worth trying for the above reasons.  Search the forums for "fried" and you"le get some idea.

You can try buying a pucka supply from shirtpocket or the like.  Or as I said try a Ipaq charger (again check the polarity)  To explane the voltage output you need to know abit about electronics.

As power is drawn from a power pack the Voltage drops this is due to the "internal resistance" of the supply.  You get the same effect with batteries but as the battery runs out the internal resistance goes up so the voltage drops.  To counter this effect some manufaturers simply increase the nominal output voltage ie with no load the output voltage is higher than the stated output.  There is alto the question of the type of output.

A good PSU will be rectified, smoothed and regulated.  As each stage costs money the cheaper the PSU the less of each you get.  Hence the need for a good stable and correctly polerized supply for your Zaurus.

thank you a lot for this

you have just awaken my interest in electronics. i will try to resist the temptation of charging the Z with these chargers.

but just fro the information how much voltage is required to burn my zaurus?

aproximately will do,

i have checked the voltage output of my nokia cell batery with a potenciometer, it is as stated on battery 3.7 V, but if i check it on a SOny charger it is stated 4.5V but shows 7,5V. so i would probably burn my zaurus with this one?
allso i have forund a JVC charger that has the same plug as original charger and it states DC4,5V - 600 mAh - ill try to check this one so if it is  5-6 V

Again thank you guys you are the best
