Flashing With Usb Power Cable?
« on: March 15, 2005, 10:50:45 am »
I have a USB power cable for a SL5500. It has USB at one end, Sharp I/O at the other, and the USB end can draw power from a USB mains adapter or car adapter. It can connect with the Sharp I/O port on the cradle.

I do not have one of the original 5V 2A adapters.

What I want to know is: has anyone successfully flashed a SL5500 using such a cable? I think USB only carries 0.5A, so could the lower current result in a brick? Thanks.

I'm not sure about a 5500, but I've never had any problems doing this with my c700, which gets flashed fairly regularly with various ROMs.

At the end of the day, what you don't want is for the power to run out before the flashing is complete. So long as your battery is fully charged and the USB power source can keep enough charge in the system for the 5 minutes or so it takes to flash you won't end up with a brick. Can't see why you should have any problems.

Again, I can't talk about the 5500 as I have an 860.

I've flashed the 860 a couple of times using a sync-charge USB cable  with no problems.

The things Mike says above all makes sense to me...

FWIW my 5600 won't let me flash without real power, ie from the charger, not from a usb adapter (& yes, my usb adapter does charge).

I have done it succesfully a number of times now, I have the SeriaIo USB lead. If it does brick your Zaurus then I would prefer not to be held responsible

Donald,

First off ... I promise not to hold you responsible. Can you tell me whether you connected the USB end of the lead to your desktop, or to a mains adapter? Thanks.

FWIW, mine has always been connected to a powered Belking USB 2.0 hub.
