Video Editor For Zaurus?
« on: March 15, 2005, 08:01:05 pm »
I've been wanting a handheld movie editor for some time now, and the Zaurus platform seems like the only PDA that could support such an application.  I'm not talking about something as fully featured as Final Cut Pro, or even iMovie.  I just want to be able to cut and paste from different clips into one.  Is this even close to being possible with the Zaurus?

Dont see why not.  I used a PII233 laptop with 64MB ram and a 4GB HDD to do mpeg1 video for ages.  It wasnt fast but it chugged through and got the job done.  As long as you dont need a floating point process there shouldnt be much diffrence.... Youve also got the A400 which can record video so shoud have some edit capability no?

You can convert a file to text and copy two chunck of info together if they are the same size format and everything else. Just make sure you only have one lot of head info. That is basically what the new programs do as well.

You can do it from pocket workstation probably, though you might have to compile the apps for arm. I think, though, that it would be painfully slow....

Pocket workstation?  I did a quick Google and found something called Debian.  Do you mean this would be able to run already existing Linux video editors?  (Like LiVE?)

I know performance would be an issue, but I was thinking the video would be compressed to a low enough quality to run smoothly.  When finished editing, the program would export an EDL (edit decision list) which would then be imported into Final Cut Pro to edit the full resolution footage.

movieguy, if you have a c700-c860 machine get www.pdxarom.org RC9.. look around the forum. full linux. should be able to compile and just work away! Let us know how you get on...
Gorgeous C860, 256 Sandisk SD, 1Gig Pretec 40x CF, PDAIR leather case & the really cool retractable iPDA USB sync/charge cable. Powered by PDAXROM BETA 1.

My wish - to have a Command & Conquer style game on my Z! (FREECNC!!!) Simcity 2000 would also be great.

Depends what you want it to do I suppose; the new Nokia phones have some form of movie editing built in:

I actually don't have any kind of Zaurus yet.  I wanted to know if what I wanted was possible before I got one.  So I'm looking for RC9, which is full version of Linux for Zaurus?

lardman,

That's sort of what I was looking for, but it seems that you can only use it on video recorded on the phone's camera.  Glad to know someone is working on such a program, though.

I did build v4l into the las 6000 kernel I compiled.  the svt680 cams are supported (aiptek vga1 --trio--)  I haven't tried it out though, as the cam hasn't arrived.

The thing is I'm not familiar with the lighter v4l based editorsso much..and I don't see cinelerra going very well on a Z.  The options do exist, though...   spend some time looking at linux video editing software..google google google.  If you get something, I'd love to know.

I did  a bit of searching on Java video tools.  There are some projects out there most based round quicktime which dont work on linux.....

So, in my searching for a program, what specs should I look for that could run on the Zaurus?

EDIT: Ok, I found this program called Kino (not the media player). http://kino.schirmacher.de/

It has all the features I want, unfortunately it seems to require a relatively powerful graphics card.  Requirements: http://kino.schirmacher.de/article/static/3

Quote
The hardware accelleration feature uses graphics card hardware for certain computational-intensive tasks (such as converting YUV format to RGB). It works only for certain modern graphics cards and XFree86 4.x. I am using a Matrox G200 and XFree86 4.0.1 with good success.

Would there be some way around this?  As I said, I just want to be able to cut and export an EDL, not render any effects.

I found a list googling "v4l editing"

look for old stuff, too--it will require less horsepower

Yeah, I saw those, but I think they're probably too much to run on the Z.  I guess what I'd really want is a stripped-down version of Kino.  I don't suppose anyone could actually try to run the program, and see if it worked?
