Card Fs To Install Softwares ?

Hi all,
Very noobe with Z. I got a SL-5500 recently. I flashed it with OZ-3.5.2 and GPE 2.5 and now run into toubles trying to install softwares on cf or sd card.
Does the cf or sd card has to be ext2 formated ? Or can it work with a fat formated one, like the cf card I use to flash the roms ?

Has to be ext2 formatted (or some other format which supports permissions and symlinks).
