Hello all,

I'm trying to connect to my laptop from my Z using VNC. I'm using a Mac OSX VNC server, which appears to be running just fine (because other computers can connect to it) - but Keypebble on my Z apparently connects ok - but just displays a great big white screen. Nothing else...

Using an SL5500 with the Hybrid rom and Keypebble 1.5.

I saw somewhere that there was a version 1.0.0 of Keypebble for Sharp roms, but I can't find it any where. I don't know if that would help.

Any suggestions?

Great - thanks for the link! I'm still having problems though... I just can't seem to view a remote desktop from the zaurus. If I run a VNC server on the Zaurus I can see its screen no problem - but not the other way around. The only error I'm getting is 'Host not found', for both the IP and the name.

Don't suppose any one could offer any help?

Well, no solution, but similar grumblings. I've a 5500 w/ Sharp 3.10 (Sharp-based Cacko ROM w/ 512MB SD, actually) and cannot get keypebble to work either - it immediately says connection refused. The VNC fb server works fine. Extremely frustrating. I even tried going through Opera to the web server built into TightVNC (which provides a Java-based client applet) on my Windoze box, but the java applet didn't load - dunno if Opera can launch Java apps or not...

Any help would be much appreciated (except for telling me to go OZ - that'll happen when they get it a bit more cleaned up and have good Word & Sheet replacements - wish I could do it myself, but I haven't the knowledge, expertese, nor time).

This might sound stupid, but it your wireless network up when you try to connect ?

Yes, it's up - I can browse w/ Opera & it's even configured to use the proxy filter I've set up on the same PC that I'm trying to VNC to and works perfectly. I've tried disabling the Kerio Personal Firewall on the PC as well to no avail. It seems to me that this is more of a TCP/IP problem because of the message, but I'm not sure where the problem lies. I tend to think it's on the Zaurus because the message comes back virtually instantaneously (and I think all 5500 owners can attest few things happen that fast on the Z). I wish I could figure this out because I think the problem may also be behind my inability to do SMB mounts of that PC's shares as well...

*sigh* Yes, I can - as I said earlier, I have the Z set up to proxy HTTP through the same PC and that works fine. I also am able to connect to a VNC Server running on the Z from same said PC. Ergo, the network itself is not the problem.

The immediate "connection refused" message would seem to confirm that it's not a connectivity issue, but rather a configuration or protocol issue. Unfortunately, I just don't know how to track it down. Any ideas?

I really appreciate you taking the time to try helping me, BTW...

I can confirm SanctimoniousApe's difficulties. When I finally got wireless networking working on my 5500 (although I am running OZ 3.5.3 instead of the Sharp ROM) I get the same thing from Keypebble... a white screen and a message of "Host not found", yet I can SSH into and ping any host on my LAN or the internet either by name or by IP address.

Here's the real kicker... for those of you familiar with using SSH to create an encrypted "tunnel" with which to "run" VNC through, I even get the "host not found" error when VNC'ing to localhost or 127.0.0.1 (for those not familiar with SSH tunneling, you access a remote host by using SSH as a port forwarder. for VNC you would do something like: use SSH to forward all requests to port 5900 on my.remote.machine through port 5905 on my.zaurus.handheld. all you have to do is VNC into local host and SSH handles the rest)

Conclusion: something is going wrong internally within Keypebble, preventing it from connecting to the specified host. Unfortunately, I have not been able to figure out what is going wrong.

OK, let's start getting methodical about it

My keypebble works fine between my SL5500 and my XP machine so i'm not convinced it's a problem with keypebble itself. (yes, i know yours is OSX but the principles should be the same)

My configs for both are set out below for you to compare to
(if an option is not mentioned, then it is unchecked)

On XP Machine:
WinVNC 3.3.6 (i find 3.3.7 & 4 unstable)
Accept Socket Connections: Checked
Password: Z (for testing)
Display number: Auto
When last client disconnects: Do Nothing
Remove Desktop Wallpaper: Checked
Poll Foreground Window: Checked
Poll window under cursor: Checked
Poll Console Windows Only: Checked

On SL5500
(Server)
Host Name: <Static IP of XP machine>
Display Number: 0
Password: Z (for testing)
Bookmark Name: <My PC>

(Options)
Check for updates every: 1 Milliseconds (i've changed this...it always changes back)
Request 8-Bit session: Checked
Scale Factor: 1

(Encodings)
Copy rectangle encoding: Checked

Ok, I think I may have figured it out, but I need someone else who is getting the "host not found" error to try this out:

I think its the "Bookmark Name" field that is the problem...

If I left it blank, I could not connect. As soon as I entered text there, Voila! It worked!

Since this is merely a "placeholder" within Keypebble's internal address book of VNC servers, it does not appear to matter what the text is, at first I used the word "test" then switched it to something more meaningful later.

So, if someone who is still experiencing the error could try entering some text into that field, and report your findings here, that would be very helpful

Solving DHCP issues is easy...don't use it.

You shouldn't really have DHCP on a WLAN anyway.
