don't you have to reencode to AAC when you transfer to the player?  I mean, you can't use mp3's on an ipod right?

Wrong.

They are converted when they go over I thought..

Wrong again.

Fuck if I know anything anymore, someone just told me that and I am too lazy to look it up.

Well, I'm telling you it's healthy for you to jump out of a 5th floor window. Gonna believe that too just because you're too lazy to look it up?

Now I'm more than happy to bash products that don't give a shit about readily available open standards (most RealNetworks and Windows Media stuff comes to mind). And as much as I dislike the iPod, spreading false information about it will most likely not damage its reputation significantly, while on the other hand it might in fact severely hurt acceptance of an open standard -- playing into the hands of those who fear open standards and thus do everything to avoid and discredit them whenever possible.

Best regards,
Chris.

Something a little different, but might be interesting: the SlimDevices folks have an open source audio server that has a pretty nice web interface that you can apply a number of "skins" to.  The server itself is perl and I believe the latest version can use a mysql database for its library.

With the right skin applied, it could look pretty nice just using a web browser on your Z.  Your laptop (or whatever your in-car computer turns out to be) would be the server and client to the SlimServer.

Or, if you want, the Zaurus can be a SlimServer client if you have mplayer on your Z to play an MP3 stream.  If you don't have mplayer, you can try slimp3slave which is a tiny C app that mimics the protocol of a SlimDevices client and uses madplay or something similar to actually play the audio.

Slimserver/Squeezebox/Other client is an awesome combo.  I run it at home with a couple of squeezeboxes.  For the Zaurus, there's also zradio that works pretty well for streaming an MP3/Shoutcaast stream.  Works well in slate mode, but looks HORRIBLE in landscape mode.

There's also a java web client that I've tried to get running on the Zaurus, but haven't had success using Personal Java.

Pycar looks good.  I was trying to run it on my Z, but it's looking for a module called 'traceback', and I don't see it in any of the feeds.  I know I originally wanted to set up a computer and do X11 forwarding, but now I'm not so sure.

To get traceback, install the full python 2.3 ipkg from the feed.  It's a built in object that's not included in the individual packages.
