Help! Cannot Mount Sd Card
« on: March 21, 2005, 01:52:15 pm »
Sorry if this is answered in another post but I'm very new to the Zaurus and reasonably new to Linux (I have checked the other posts and there are some similar but not quite!!)

I have a Zaurus 5500g running Openzaurus 3.5.2 with Opie desktop. I'm trying to add a new 1gb SD card (Apacer highspeed - 60x). When the Zaurus boots  I get the following from Dmesg...

Help! Cannot Mount Sd Card

Oh, and the card works fine in my USB reader on Win2K (Sorry forgot to mention that, I've also reformatted just in case)

Help! Cannot Mount Sd Card

Hmmm, got a bit further and have managed to access the card via fdisk, I can delete and rewrite the partition, then write and reboot, mkfs.ext2 /dev/mmcda1 and then it just seems to revert back to being fat16????? (No errors along the way, each task works fine apparently)

Now I'm really confused!

Help! Cannot Mount Sd Card
« Reply #4 on: March 22, 2005, 12:18:21 pm »
Right then! After rolling my sleeves up and burning the candle at both ends I think I may have an explanation.... (Feel free to correct me when I wander in the wrong direction, i'm still new to this and trying to piece it together bit by bit)

There seems to be much debate about which cards work and which don't but the overall contributing factor to this issue appears to be a combination of driver support (currently a closed source sharp mmc/sd driver on my Z, I have found another driver but I'm not too sure what to do with it!!!!) and implementation of standards by manufacturers.

The method of access to an SD card is not via the SD/SDIO standards but instead by "MMC compatability mode" which makes the use of high speed cards relatively useless (although bizarrely some makes are better then others but still not up to spec). This, added to an incomplete implementation by the manf makes the card real tricky to deal with.

https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...1330&hl=sd+card

So I've gone for the rather easy option of selling my new card and buying a new one (I got it cheap in the first place and took less than 5 minutes to sell it to an Ipaq user at work). My new card should be a Viking 1gb from eBuyer and it'll arrive on thursday so I'll post back if I get lucky!!! (I'll also be trying a 32mb lexar tonight but I suspect that one will be fine).

Looks like the theory on different brands is quite correct!
