Symbol/socket Bluetooth Cf Card
« on: March 21, 2005, 05:03:04 pm »
I bought one of these:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...5176474777&rd=1

It's a genuine Symbol/Socket compact flash card.

I can confirm it worked without a problem on Cacko1.22 on SL-C860, and use it for wireless lan surfing in conjunction with a PC which has a bluetooth dongle (similar set up to when I was using a Palm T3, only I am using PAND network rather than ppp over rfcomm).

Being bluetooth, it's much more power efficient than Wireless Lan, I was able to surf and ssh for an hour and only lost 10-15% battery; there's enough bandwidth to use kphone to a SIP server without problems.

Sadly for non UK, they won't ship abroad. However, if anyone really wants one, I am willing to buy on their behalf for a beer token, and ship abroad - PM me if interested.

if anyone else is interested let me know ASAP as someone else wants to buy, so I can probably shave a bit off the delivery costs.

Sudden flurry of interest in these cards, which is not surprising.

First off, I can shave a little off the price to be delivered to me, but probably just one pound, so it will cost me 11 pound to receive each card. They come in a sort of half plastic box, inside is a cardboard sheet with CDs inside, with the CF card in a blister. I am happy to throw away and re-wrap the card, cds and paperwork to make it lighter.

I live in Cambridge, England, and will use Royal Mail to post out items; let me know your address so I can check postage, but you can find out yourself how much it will cost. The full weight will be just under 250 grammes (unless I throw away some of the packaging). Their website with the postage rates is:
[a href=\"http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/jump2?catId=400023&mediaId=400033]http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/jump2?c...&mediaId=400033[/url]

I have a US$ account with Citibank (use www.xe.net/ucc to get the exchange rate, and add 10% to cover the bid/offer spread please), which has to be paid by cheque; it takes a little while to clear as well (three weeks the last time I used it!).

Or, you can pay to my UK account by some form of wire transfer (I will give you my IBAN number).. or I guess it would have to be cash. I can also take NoChex (www.nochex.co.uk). I do have a paypal account, but I despise Paypal for their well-catalogued historic abuse of their customers, and I would have to charge extra to cover paypal fees.

Is this enough information for you all?

At the moment there are about four buyers. I am tempted to buy five of the cards anyway as the auction closes in 14 hours.

I have been to the post office (my son is ill so I am at home looking after him), and the best price fo postage was the "small packet" rate, which is a little under GBP2 within Europe, and GBP3 to China/Beijing.

I have bought four of these CF BT cards as there are three definites and one maybe.

Oh yes, one other thing, the cards are a perfect fit into Z, they don't stick out at all, which is very convenient. Battery life is definitely pretty good compared to my CF wlan card.

I paid for the items and am expecting them tomorrow; there was a small reduction in postage costs to 1.25 per item.

Postperson tried to deliver whilst everyone was out, and tomorrow is a bank holiday so Post Office closed. I should be able to collect on Saturday and I'll label up the packages ready to send out as soon as each person's payment clears.

If anyone plans to use these with a GPS and/or BT cell phone for internet access, especially on a 6000, I'd love to hear how things work out, positive or negative.

the good news is that all four turned up today (terible queue in our little village post office).
even better news: all four work; I'm  using one right now with my Z to post this.
best of all news: I am sending the first one out today to Beijing! Being bank holiday, the banks get a chance to screw their customers for an extra few days over interest by delaying money payments longer :-(

There seems to be another auction on these cards:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...5180607548&rd=1

I'm interested in getting one of these. Will you be ordering again if there are new requests?

Once I've had payment for the four, and shipped them out, I *might* consider it, but to be honest, it's a lot of hassle. People have been generous giving a bit extra to buy me a beer or two, so I've not been out of pocket at all, but that's all my margin (I intend to give half the "profit" to the Cacko project along with a bit extra as a grateful user).

I am very busy with my baby son (14 months old), and whilst I do want to "share" the love with fellow Zaurians to help them get a bargain, maybe there's another person in the UK who would be willing to sell on a batch?

If there were a bunch of Z users in the same country who wanted to buy a batch, then it'd be a lot easier.

Has noone contacted the seller to try and persuade to ship abroad? GBP2 "Small packet" rate covers parcels to the value of GBP28 to pretty much anywhere in Europe.

I understand the hassle that this might generate. I tried asking the seller if he'd ship to Europe so I'm keeping my finger's crossed. Let's see...
If ever one of the four cards you bought never get paid, you can it reserve for me.

Just bought one for myself and couldn't just ignore the interest expressed by Gondola and TechMetal, so I bought a couple of extra ones too.

Hope you two guys are still interested. If so, please let me know. If not, I'll open the offer up to anyone else. Sorry, but I didn't want to go through the exercise of looking for interest from others before I bought my own.

If nobody's interested, I'll just have to take it on the chin. I can probably use two cards myself anyway.

I really haven't thought too much about payment, but I do have PayPal and Nochex accounts. Looking at earlier posts, the cost would be 10 pounds plus 3.25 postage to Europe.

Cheers

Ian
