Midnight Commander File Transfers With Z?
« on: March 23, 2005, 01:44:58 pm »
Hi
I use Midnight Commander a lot, both on my main linux box and the Z (C860).

I use it quite a lot on the main box for uploading files to a website, using the virtual file system facility  eg  cd /ftp:user:pass@website.address.com

My attempts to use a similar strategy with the Z have not been successful.

I can open a ssh tunnel to the Z no problem, log on as root and do whatever I want.  I have all the open ssh files for client and server on the Z.

I dont know if mc can use ssh or is limited to a simple ftp connection, which the Z rejects.

Has anyone experience of accessing the Z file system directly from Midnight Commander?

Thanks
C860 - with Sharp ROM
1GB SD and 2 GB & 256MB CF
WiFi, Bluetooth and Sharp CF camera cards
Ubuntu 6.06
(WinXP if I really have to)

Hi 2tomcats

Thanks for that,

I assume that you can also do "cd /#sh:root@zaurus/" from within mc to change to the external directory, if it takes that as a commandline argument.

I have been trying "cd /#ssh:root@zaurus/" and "cd /#sftp:root@zaurus/" without sucess.  Didn't think of just sh!

Will try it out tomorrow

Hi

Success with the commandline launch of "mc /#sh:root@198.162.129.201"
brings up mc with main box in left pane and Zaurus in right pane, all that is needed.

Transfers of large files just as fast as under sftp from commandline and light years faster than windoze (Win_XP for 250MB .avi file 35 mins, Linux 6mins!!!!)

Can't connect from within mc unless, as happened once, connection was dropped during transfer and re-established using "cd /#sh:root:passcode@198.162.129.201/" to get dir listing back.

Out of interest, do not make transfers to the Z from a windows partition mounted under linux.  I had some files on my XP partition which I tried transfering direct from there.  Result failure.

Move the same files over to a linux partition and then transfer them, no problems whatsover.
I am root on main box and Z but problem is still down to permissions.  Windows doesnt understand or use them and obviously mangled them so that the write failed.

Thanks for your help

I'll move on to the next challenge (problem) now
