C1000 And C3000, Vs 860
« on: April 03, 2005, 10:27:28 pm »
So, my new C1000 and C3000 have just arrived, fresh off the plane.

First impressions - they feel a lot bigger than my 860. The difference is a couple of mm each way, but they seem bigger. The screens lock at a slightly higher angle than the 860's does. The power button in the front is a definite ergonomic improvement as well - the 860's power button is hidden when you have the screen locked open.  I like the keyboard better - it feels better to type on. It sits in the hand a little differently when thumboarding as well, due to the slightly thicker body. The speaker is a vast improvement - the 860 sounds like a muffled mess in comparison.

Out of the box the internal memory on the C1000 has 53mb of 64mb free. The C3000 has 367mb of 398(!)mb free in the OS partition, and 2.7gb free in the data partition.

The pre-loaded software is almost identical. The 860 and 1000 have the same Kanji Dictionary program. (like the Canon Wordtank, etc that are so popular over there). The 3000 has the new Multi-Media encyclopedia instead. (Although I've get to get it to give a picture or utter a sound.) The 860 and the 3000 have the English/Japanese translator program. The 1000 doesn't - it has something else (literally called "Database"), but I've yet to figure out what that is. The 1000 also has the Subway map program and the Photostorage program. My 1000 also came with the Sharp Mediaplayer V2 instead of V1.

The only oddity appears to be the screen on the 3000 - it is slightly yellower and doesn't have quite as much contrast as the 1000 and the 860. The difference is very slight - you'd never notice if they weren't sitting next to each-other.

The RH2 is also an improvement over the RH1. The RH1 cable has a plasticy type of insulation that gets stiff in cooler weather. The RH2 has a rubber insulation that will deal with my Edmonton winters much better

Appearance-wise the 1000 is the clear winner. The 1000's textured matt-black top and gray keyboard win out over the shiny iPod-white 3000, hands down. The 1000 is a *very* sharp looking unit. (No pun intended) Surprisingly, I don't mind the 3000 as much as I thought I would. The 860's silver on silver approach has always looked a little bland in comparison to it's older siblings (like the black screen on the 750), and that doesn't change here. It looks almost boring in comparison.

The 3000 and 1000 have color-coordinated stylii and CF blanks (grey/white and black/black), which is kind of neat. The SD blanks and the factory port covers look a little out of place in flat gray, as they're surrounded by silver.

I will be swapping the motherboards in the 3000 and 1000 as soon as I've played with them for a bit. The 3000 is going to be my daily use one and it *has* to be the sexy black one

Thanks for that info. How long does battery last on new units compared to 860 (ie same wifi card on 860 vs 3000 vs 1000)?

Now that I actually have a 3000, I'll be inclined to donate my time. I'm going to see if I can help maslovsky and iamasmith get the new ROMs going on these.

I'll look into doing a battery life comparison later this week.

So now you finally got them, what do you think of those keyboards.

It took a while to get used to the Joypad instead of the four cursor keys but I think the keyboard is a real improvement over the SL-C860.

I still keep reaching to the back of the unit to suspend it though.

I love the new ergonomics. The screen locks in a better position and it sits in the hand well. The keyboard is *fanstastic*! I was never very happy with the build of the keyboard on the 860. The size was perfect and the keys worked pretty well, but the feel was a little off. The keyboard on the c3000 feels solid and precise, making it do justice to the PDA instead of just being functional. And we absolutely cannot forget the decicated control key.

It took a couple of tries to figure out the keypad vs the arrow keys, but it very quickly becomes second nature.

The power key does take a little getting used to. I seem to have to hold it for a half second or so to turn off the Z, where the 860 was just click-on, click-off. It is better in the front - I hated it being stuck under the screen when it was locked open.

The weirdest thing about the keyboard is the little round application buttons  I liked the big, dark squares on the 860.

24hrs later, I'm very happy with the 3000

I just got my iRiver cables in from UPS. The usb keyboard was as easy as plugging it in. Very nice. Some of the keyboard mappings are interesting - F11 as Function, F12 as home, f5-f9 being the application shortcut keys, etc. F1 turns off the LCD

Haven't got mass storage figured out, but that'll be next.

keep an eye on the 6000 usb keyboard progress as that will translate over to the 3000/1000.  It seems to be pretty close to finish.
I'm now an iphone user and use my zaurii as serial terminals, perl and shell scripting and when I need 640x480 screens

60hrs later, I do have one beef with the keyboard. The new location of the cancel button annoys me. On the 860 I would hold it in my left hand and the stylus in my right. If I wanted to "cancel" something I could hit the centralized cancel button with my thumb. On the new keyboard, the cancel button has been moved all the way over to the right side, beside the dpad. It takes a few times of smacking empty plastic in the middle of the keyboard to get used to.

I showed the new Z's to a fellow 860 owner. He started gushing about the keyboard about 1.2 seconds after opening the screen
