@jfv: Perhaps your frequent hard resets corrupted the file.

I've no idea what's supposed to be in it - how's about using ssh and touching the file, then see if it gets any further.

@woloi: Connect to the 'net; run ipkg update.

I have been testing 3.5.3-gpe on my poodle and it looks great. There are just a couple of problems I have come across so far. First my wifi card (WL-672) was reckognized but not working.  To get it working I took the orinoco_cs.o module from 3.5.2 and copied it to my sd card and loaded it from there.  After I did that and put my wifi card in the net connection came up and a wifi applet in the launcher.  The net works great as long as I dont touch that wifi applet. If I do it freezes the device requiring a hard reset.  Im doing some more testing now so I will post more info later.

Hi,

GPE 3.5.3 looks pretty sweet. I for one thought it was worth the wait  Just a few minor niggles.

1. Clicking the Control Panel icon under Settings seems to do absolutely nothing, except flash at you. Is this intentional?

2. For some reason, after an hour of usage, the rotate screen button on the panel no longer works - as in, if you click it absolutely nothing occurs, no feedback or any reaction at all. Also, attempting to change the screen rotation via the Screen Setup capplet under Settings also does absolutely nothing (as in, literally absolutely nothing at all occurs). I realise that this isn't a very good description - is there some way of getting debug/verbose output from this, so I can pass it on to you guys to help figure it out?

Also, is anybody else experiencing the same issue?

3. Likewise, for some strange reason, the Rosetta input seems broken now. Before, I got the cool full-screen input, and I had a funny icon next to the input selector and arrow that you click to enable/disable it. Now, that icon is gone (nor is it on the Add to applet menu), and when I click the Input selector, the old-style handwriting panel pops up (Lowercase, Uppercase, Symbol), and I can't seem to find a way to re-enable full-screen input. What's up with that? Once again, any way to get debug output for this?

4. The networking setup is also kinda weird. I'm trying to follow the instructions here, and here, but once again, absolutely nothing happens (the God of Nothing must have a thing today...lol). As in, no log messages are printed, no modules are loaded.

The Network Setup capplet also seeks rather screwed....

How exactly are you meant to configure the usbd0 interface? It's wasn't listed at the top, so I thought, that's fine, I'll make a new one. But when you attempt to create a new interface called "usbd0", it complains about "This interface definition already exists!". But since there doesn't appear to be any way to access this supposedly already created definition, how are you meant to customize it?

Thanks,
Victor

1)  I also get nothing when "clicking" the control panel icon.

2)  I had the opposite issue with the rotate screen button, it didn't work at first but then started working.  I didn't use it that much--I need the PIM from OPIE and haven't figured out how to move my PIM data to GPE yet--so I don't know if it would stop working after a longer time.

3)  I didn't have any problem with Rosetta, I really like it.  It was on by default.

this'll end up in the 6k 353 thread too, I think.

On my 6k gpe is very much better than it had been in 3.5.2. Suspend works, gxine is (though i haven't tested it much) exactly the thing needed for its purpose, etc....

But, I guess I should mention issues I've noticed:

on the 6k , at least, flashing from a factory-fresh state makes a big difference. flashing to oz gpe from previuos custom setups can cause problems.

Minimo, one of my favorite opensource projects, seems crippled this time around. I cannot get it to do stuff like enter passwords on sites.  for example when I try to log on to zug I give my username - adf  and my password--xxxxxx  and get back a messagwe to the effect that i can't be logged in because I haven't entered a user name.  This is frustrating.  I realize minimo is a big project and maybe mentioning it on the gpe thread doesn't do much good, but if I am to use gpe, then I need a web browser. I would very much prefer that it be minimo.  Is this a known problem with this release of minimo?  is there a fix, workaround or planned upgrade?  would anyone mind postiing dillo in the feeds again if this can't be fixed (patched to handle ssl)? or firefox?  I will "reactiviate" my toolch\ain this afternoon, and give a shot a compiling a new minimo , and firefox and dillo.

Ideas comments ponters?  Links to a fully funcional minimo?  ?

Also, office apps?  I realize the Z is not the best platform for running an office, but a good word processor and spreadsheet are nice to have on the Z for occasional use, and opening (stupid) email attachments. abiword and gnumeric used to be in oz/gpe......

Still, despite the minimoo/office thing (both of which are definitely solvable) gpe is starting to look really good.  I'll stick with it for a while this time, I think---and i'm really looking forward to the 2.6 thing getting sorted out, and the gui settings stuff being finished (like the wireles app?)

minimo does passwords for me - have you had the site you're refering to working with minimo before?

Control panel icon also works for me.

What doesn't work is a capital Y.

Abiword is around - try here for example: http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/sfeed/

It should be added to the Upgrades feed though.

OZ 3.5.3 release has happened, please skip to the bottom of this post (note: post, not thread) to see updates and information related to the official GPE image.

As I only have a collie, I can't say how the gpe-image will be on other PDAs, but the issues I was concerned with for OZ/GPE 3.5.3 have mostly been resolved now, so I have provided a preview image, along with Minimo, <link removed due to release>. Note that although I have provided a few kernel memory configurations, I have only tested with 64-0. Minimo requires a fair amount of memory, and may not perform well with other configurations - If you have success, or indeed failure, please report here!

Slightly updated software may be included in the final release image, but on the whole, this is how it will be. If you notice any show-stopping bugs, please say, and I'll try to fix them ASAP. As the release is planned for tomorrow, likelihood is this image represents the final image almost exactly, so I hope you like it!

I may add to the software located at the link above if the release doesn't happen on time. Packages from the 3.5.2 and 3.5.1 feeds should work ok with this image, but I can't guarantee that.

Known bugs:
- Key shortcuts can't be configured
- Auto-sleep doesn't work
- Alarms don't work during suspend
- 'Control Panel' shortcut doesn't work
- Light control in the 'Screen Setup' application is very erratic
- Enabling visual effects will cause input to stop working - Things will be fine once X has been killed/restarted remotely, or the PDA is restarted
- The MBOpus theme doesn't contain all necessary theme elements to handle docked apps
- Hold for right-click seems not to work over some elements anymore
- GPE's package manager is still mostly unusable for collie (it lacks the ability to install to a non-root location)

Notable fixes/changes since 3.5.1/3.5.2:
- ipkg-link now reads /etc/ipkg.conf
- Resuming from suspend works
- Updated software (Minimo!)
- Changed package destinations (/mnt/cf -> /media/cf/packages, etc.)

Please use this topic for any conversation on problems and solutions related to GPE - I'll do my best to help out.

Updates - 12th April '05

New applications/upgrades in my ipk directory:
-gpe-filemanager (along with gnome-vfs plugins)
-enhanced gxine (along with all necessary libxine plugins, and extra oss audio output plugin)
-updated matchbox (small fixes over the subversion snapshot featured in this image)
-updated gtk (fixes odd behaviour of GtkTreeView widgets)

NB: OZ release happening very soon now (perhaps tomorrow?), so most of this will be included with the OZ release. In the case it gets delayed however, here it is for early-adopters

Updates - 13th April '05

-OZ 3.5.3 released, pre-release removed
-gxine, updated matchbox and necessary dependencies upload to official upgrades feed

Note! If you want to play oggs with gxine, you will have to force the downgrade of libvorbisidec to the version contained in the upgrades feed. Hopefully this will be fixed in the future, and will certainly be fixed in future releases.

BTW guys, why it's soooooo slow in my 5500?

that is the weird thing about the minomo issue.  I HAve had it work on sites that it isn't working on now.  It currently doesn't send a password to ANY site under any method i can come up with.
it is really, really strange.  On the other handf it renders better now than i remember it rendering. (or is that just me?))
i am also having issues doing remote x. I keep getting  a "no authentication method" error xauth is installed by default. is this a dropbear thing? ought I to pull dropbear and install openssh? I'll do that just in case.
any ideas?
edit: dropbear isn't installed, dillo2 IS in the feed. ooops.
still having that auth method problem

fixed the ssh auth issue.... I had not linked openssh after installing. oops

Anyone using gpe on a 5600?  I think it works better on the 5500 because there is more ram on those machines.  With a clean install and a reboot ram usage is at atleast 95%.  This is pretty much the only thing holding gpe back from working great on poodle.

I removed all the applets and stopped a lot of programs and i still cant free up more than a total of 3 or 4 mb of ram. Any ideas?

The RAM usage in the systems information settings is a little misleading, you may have more free than is reported (it is always like that on my collie too, yet it seems to find enough memory to run minimo, prismstumbler, gpe-edit and rxvt, simultaneously, ok )

Has anyone been able to get alarms to work while suspeneded on any of the non clamshells (5500,5600,6000l).  I saw the notes about it not working with collie but I cant seem to get it to work with either my 5600 or 6000l.  No errors, nothing in the logs I can find.  Just dosent happen.  But I get all backed up alarms when the system is turned back on.

edit- sorry i see that its listed here as not working for any model.  nevermind

As ever, make sure you've not inlculded chached memory in you total of used, as it's not 'used' in the sense that nothing else can touch it, just doing something useful until another program needs it (when it will be freed and allocated to the prog which requires it).

Hi,

I'm still toying with this release, but not sure how wireless networking
control is supposed to function.  I can create a connection over WEP
and use the Z as an X server OK.

But, I'm confused as to why the network seems to not come up on a
boot with a CF Wifi card in.  If I pull it, and re-insert it, the network
will come up.

I"m also wondering why "cardctl status" does not show any information
for socket 1, when I have an SD card in.

Anyway, this release seems very cool, and I look forward to playing with
it over the weekend, and figuring out how to install and manage packages
on SD.   Then it's on to getting JAVA working.

Here's my feedback. Some of it may have already been posted, but I can't see it hurting if it shows up more than once.

~About 2 pixle lines at the bottom of the display is corrupt durring boot. All clean after GPE is up.
~Detects Ambicom WiFi card as ZCOMAX AirRunner/XI-300
~Screen blanked as I was typing into the GPE text editor. Pressing a few keys restored it.
~Panel clock is pretty much unusable when the screen is rotated. May we have an option to have the bar either on the bottom or on the side? I can how having it on the side would be very handy, but an option would be great.
~Audio Mixer - How do you close it? Takes up almost 1/2 the screen. Had to logout/in to get rid of it.
~Logging out (To kill the Audio Mixer) brought me to the timezone adjustment.
~Autologin logs in as root. Can we select which user gets auto logged in?
~Closing a root shell opend from a standard user resulted in the following error: urxvt: can't get colour '#969696' continue without. Selecting OK prompts for the root password.
~Screen Setup - The default brightness level of 10 does not accurately reflect the true bright ness. Adjusting the brightness and then setting it back to 10 does not yeild the same level of brighness as before the change.
That said, the brighness does not stay at the requested value. It snaps back almost immediately back to 10 which is now kind of dark. The brighness applet does allow the setting to be changed.
~Sokoban - Looks good, but the control pad does not follow the screen rotated state.
~Feeds - None of them were listed in the package manager.
~SSh - Worked perfectly once I setup the USB0 interface on the Z. X forwarding worked well in most cases also.

I'm getting ready to (a) try and perform an upgrade from the upgrade feed which should prove if the nework setup is correct, if that failes then ( figure out why (A) didn't work and maybe mirror the upgrade feed to my SD card and upgrade that way.

I'll post a followup once I retest everything should the upgrade go well.

~Screen blanked as I was typing into the GPE text editor. Pressing a few keys restored it.
It's a known bug that if you hold down the right arrow key on collie it suspends - did you do this by any chance?

Quote

Have a look at the matchbox documentation at http://projects.o-hand.com/matchbox - Any contributions of patches or applications are welcome

Don't use the MBOpus theme

~Autologin logs in as root. Can we select which user gets auto logged in?
Known bug - Will probably be fixed in the next release, possibly in the upgrades feed in the future

Quote
~Closing a root shell opend from a standard user resulted in the following error: urxvt: can't get colour '#969696' continue without. Selecting OK prompts for the root password.
I may fix this at some point, easy to fix bug

Due to unreadable brightness status on collie - Needs to be fixed at kernel level

Missing keymaps, as said before - contributions welcome

As said in the release notes, gpe-packagemanager is mostly unusable for collie and still in a very early state.

Maybe you could post how you did this in the making connections/synchronisation threads?

Good luck, and thanks for the feedback
