Help..oz Flashing Problem
« on: April 07, 2005, 11:03:53 am »
Hi Need some urgent help...At the mo zaurus to useless.

I have tried Flashing my zaurus sl-5500 with the OZ 3.5.2..I downloaded the OPIE image file and the Zimage 48-16 file. I renamed the files as stated in the install doco, attached Z to the mains then Flashed..Both lights came on for a couple of mins then went off. I then hit the Reset button, put the battery cover back on and turned the Z on.

When the Z boots up it hangs with the message "Kernel panic: Attempted to Kill init!"
What does this meen?

When this hangs at the Top of the screen you have Open Zaurus in big writing then (i can just make this out) "Data CRC failed on node" and "Majic bitmack not found(Think thats right)
Then there is Usage Busybox with a disciption of busybox below. Then below that Current defined functions with rows of functions.
Then the Error pops up and hangs.

This will then stay like this for about 5mins - 10mins and then switch off. If i want to try turning on again i have to press restart before i can switch on.

I tried Re-downloading the files again and reformating the CF card but its exactly the same.
Does it matter if you reformat (FAT) the CF with a CF reader on a Windows XP or 2000?

Thanks in advanced,

Dave

Did you check the md5sums of the files before you flashed them.

Also, just to set my mind at rest, what did you name them?

I assume the comma was a typo ;-) and you meant initrd.bin. Other than that the names are correct.

The md5sums are listed in the dorectory where you found the image & kernel.

On Linux you should have the md5sum binary already, for Windows try a google "md5sum AND windows".

E.g.: http://www.etree.org/cgi-bin/counter.cgi/software/md5sum.exe

Yep it was a typo, ,

I have md5summed the files and the numbers match up. I will try flashing one more time then ill the version below.
Other then that i might have to try another CF card. I don't know whether formating has done anything to it. I'm sure there were to Directories onit when i brought it,  which have no gone.
Would that make ay Difference

What did you flash from?

The kernel looks like it flashed (the OpenZaurus bit when it booted) so I'm doubtful that it's an issue with the card or its formatting.

You say the md5sums were right, so the initrd.bin wasn't at fault either.

The only other thing I can think of is to try a different kernel (on the off chance that the once you chose doesn't work for some reason - most users/developers use the 64-0, so I'm not sure if the one you tried has ever been tested). I'd pick the 64-0 (as that's what I've tried and it works).

Right, I have now tried another version, and the 64-0 kernal.
It does only take about 1 min to flash, and assume it should take longer.
Do you think it would make any difference trying another ROM?
Does anyone know what the errors i received meen.

And is there anything i can do to get this to boot?

Thanks

What did you have on the Zaurus before you tried flashing (I'm trying to work out whether the kernel flashed)?

If it only takes one minute it sounds like the initrd.bin isn't being flashed (it normally takes something like 6 min).

You could try flashing something else, but I don't think the card is at fault as it appears that something has been flashed.

I can't think of anything else, except to double check md5sums and naming once the files are on the card just in case something has messed them up en route.

I had Sharps standard ROM which i upgraded a couple of months ago. Its the one you do whilst the Z stays in the cradle. No flashing required.

What Other ROM do you recommend trying.

Ok, so the card does work (as the OZ kernel flashed).

the only reason to try another ROM would be to rule out a dodgy card (which we've ruled out now).

This is all very odd, I've managed to flash my 5500 with the 3.5.2 Opie image (and GPE image) plus the 64-0 kernel, so I can't work out why you can only flash a kernel, other than what I said above, about file extensions and md5sums.

Sorry, I'm out of ideas.

You get that when it tries to re-spawn too many times. I suppose it would panic as init is the process which the kernel starts, then init starts the other processes.

I have encoutered this before, but only when I flashed and forgot to press the hard reset button before booting.

I have justy tried Flashing the Cacko ROM, This also took about a min and when i tried Booting back up it was still saying Open Zaurus and it stopped at the same point.

Is there any other way i can get this to Flash.

Could it be the CF Card that is the problem.

It might be the CF card, I'd try another if you have one available.

Alright mate,
You're sponding quick

I haven't got another CF card but i might have to buy another 256. Think you can get one for around £20.

Cheers
