You can't flash a 5500 with an SD-card. You only need a small CF-card for flashing... maybe you can find a cheap 32 or 64 MB?

Does it matter if you reformat (FAT) the CF with a CF reader on a Windows XP or 2000?

Most of the time it's OK but I have had some problems with my Z and camera. That said you could try a live CD like Puppy Linux. It's small and easy to make and use... then you could use fdisk to check your CF-card and make a new partition, then reformat before buying another card.

Yes, just make sure you understand how to use fdisk. The Puppy live cd has gui utilities that will make it somewhat easier for a new Linux user... but you will still have to use fdisk and format from the command line in rxvt.

I have now installed Puppy Linux, I am having trouble getting it to mount the CF reader, I have a feeling that i need drivers for Linux for this. The reader i have is http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage...MediaReaders%2F

You can go to start>utilities>mount/umount... and see if it is listed. It will probably be sda1 but it could be something else depending on what your using with usb.

Then go to where it's mounted with Rox or rxvt to take a look inside, but you will need to umount it for fdisk and reformatting.

If you still have problems you should check on Puppys Forum. Barry has just added the latest 'Puppy drive mounter' program to the system and all of this info is on the Puppy Linux Forum.
